The Hasbro company has chosen Logan Avenue School for a grant that will bring fun to the students and money to victims of the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti.
“I have 10 boxes in my room, full of games — all of the games that Hasbro makes,” said school counselor Carla Fessler.
Fessler discovered the Hasbro offer through the Kids Care Club Web site. Logan Avenue has a branch of the national club and has been mentioned previously on the Web site for Logan students’ activities previously.
She completed the grant application and learned recently that the students had won.
“They just wanted us to agree to hold a playathon,” she said of the grant requirements.
The playathon, which will begin at 6 p.m. March 23, will be open to the public and will be held in the Logan Avenue gymnasium.
“It’s open to whoever wants to come,” she said. “They don’t have to necessarily be a Logan Avenue family.”
Meeting the requirement to hold a playathon has required the school to drop, for one year, two activities that previously had been held annually.
“I kinda just decided this year after I got this grant that we’d forgo the boys’ and girls’ night this year and do the playathon,” Fessler said.
Members of Kids Care Club and Logan Avenue Leaders will collect donations from those who want to contribute to the drive for Haiti. They also will solicit donations from family and friends before the playathon, Fessler said.
Hasbro will match the amount donated through the playathon.
The company sent games appropriate for an assortment of age groups.
Fessler said that tables will be set up in the gym, with different types of games on each table. Players will rotate from table to table, in order to participate in multiple games.
Fresh-popped popcorn will be available, and Girl Scouts have committed to selling cupcakes and also donating the proceeds to Haiti, too.
Fessler said that donations to the Haiti fund may be sent to Logan Avenue School, 521 S. East St.

How great is that! What a way to show kids how to help others in need! Bravo to Fessler to getting this grant.
