A clean-shaven Emporia helped Clint Bowyer in his quest to win the Gillette 500.
Bowyer was in Emporia on Monday at Longbine Auto Plaza, and fans showed up circling around the parking lot to get Bowyer’s autograph and a shave. Bowyer signed approximately 300 autographs, and two Gillette girls gave approximately 50 shaves and distributed 250 samples.
Bowyer has teamed with fellow NASCAR driver Carl Edwards in a competition against three other teams to see which team can generate the most shaves. Bowyer and Edwards currently sit in first place, followed by the team of Denny Hamlin and Kasey Kahne; Kyle Busch and Joey Lagano are in last place.
“I like how they did the program this year teaming us up, Carl and I being from the Midwest,” Bowyer said. “We have a lot of pride in leading this thing so far, and hopefully because of this great turnout here in Emporia, we can come out of here with a good points’ pad.”
The Gillette Young Gun promotion’s goal is to record more than 500,000 shaves — the equivalent of 500 miles of skin — before April 30.
The effort began last month in Daytona, Fla., and the three teams are traveling from coast-to-coast with each driver making a special stop in his hometown.
“I’m just thankful to have partners like Gillette and this Young Gun program,” Bowyer said. “To be a part of that and part of the Coca-Cola program, we have a blast. The commercials you’ve been seeing on TV are so much fun.”
Bowyer is off to a fast start this season with three top 10 finishes, and he sits in second place in the Sprint Cup points’ standings. He was jovial on Monday as he sat in front of a Gillette motor coach and signed autographs, while two Gillette girls shaved locals faces nearby.
“Gillette brought two cute girls, they’re shaving and cleaning all these guys up so they can go home to their women and look good,” Bowyer said.
