Fireworks go on sale Sunday

Friday, June 25, 2010

Fireworks stands are being set up. Sales begin Sunday.

Fireworks will go on sale Sunday in celebration of the Fourth of July holiday and will be on sale until July 5 in Lyon County.

One local family is selling fireworks in Lyon County for the 10th year. Tom Riley and his family sell fireworks under the name Riley Fireworks Outlet at 1667 Road 175 in a pole barn. Being in a pole barn allows for less dust and more protection from weather, Riley said.

Riley, who is in the propane business, originally decided to start selling fireworks because the summer is a slow time of year for propane.

The Rileys get their fireworks from a company in Odessa, Mo. Fireworks have to be ordered by the first of May and preferably earlier, Riley said.

“It’s first come, first serve,” he said.

You shouldn't be having any issues yet considering they aren't even allowed until the 3rd...

"The discharge of fireworks will be allowed from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on July 3 and from 10 a.m. to midnight on July 4."

If you have been witness to the premature discharge of class C fireworks, I suggest you contact the authorities. Ignoring a crime is almost as bad as committing a crime yourself.

They've been going on in my neighborhood today and I did call the police. They drove up and down the street a few times. Then as soon as they were gone, BANG!

This is a waste of police time.

I'm not one of those who wanted fireworks in the city, but now I have to put up with it.

The best thing everyone could do is hook up a garden hose to a faucet. If there is a small fire started, the kids are going to run and hide, and maybe the home owner can get it put out before chief Taylor can find a couple of radios that work, or maybe cant locate all his female firefighters, we all must be prepared. Firecrackers scare off evil spirits. I bet Emporia is really full of evil spirits since firecrackers have always been banned there. Hopefully the evil will depart "E" ville but it's probably going to take a few years of bang pop pow for that to happen.

create,

You are right, it is a waste of police manpower. Last year it was illegal and so far this year it is illegal until the 3rd of July. No difference. Forget about calling the police, what harm is being done? We have a lot more to worry about here in Emporia than a few firecrackers going off for a week or so. Ignore it, it will go away.

This "trial" run of allowing fireworks in the city limits will most likely fail. Some nimrod will start a fire or hurt themselves and the law banning fireworks in the city will return. When they put this trial run together they should have allowed fireworks use at the same time sales are allowed. Then there would be a lot less police calls and wasted man hours and dispatches. This time of year most have their a/c on and the windows closed. Run a box fan for a little noise to keep the pets calm and enjoy the celebration.

And let's give the police department patrol units a break and DON"T call any complaints in.

I have heard that the parking lot just north of the fire dept on Industrial is being made available for those who want to shoot off the more loud fireworks. sure is nice of the fire chief to allow use of his parking lot for the children to fire them off, especially those
who want to light up all the package all at once. I look forward to purchase a package of a thousand and one match, gets it over quickly that way, should be fun on the parking lot there.

I'm just glad there won't be as much trash on our country roads as nomal, maybe. There haven't been any fields set afire lately, but people don't remember to pick up the trash when they are done and then our ditches look awful. We get tired of picking up after a few slobs. Glad to see this trial run and hopefully it will go well and folks will be able to continue to set off their fireworks in town.

eaglefan,
That seems a little selfish. Moving the problem somewhere else (in town) isn't a real solution. Think of all the trash we'll have in town now! The gutters/sewers will be all clogged with spent fireworks. Not to mention when a field burns down there is usually no loss of human life, but when a city block burns down the results are often more tragic. Think of the children! Do you really want the precious children of Emporia meeting a fiery demise just so you don't have to pick up a little trash?

I suggest you call the cops on the country litterers. Even if you don't see 'em, the cops might be able to find receipts or something to link a person to the crime. Heck, they might even find fingerprints on the trash itself. Zero tolerance! No mercy!

I can't wait for 10am on the 3rd! My neighbor's dogs will love it! BOOM! CRACKLE! ZIP! ZING! BEEEYOOOO! KABLAM! Good morning Emporia! Heh, heh, heh... Hope none of the kids at the day care are trying to take a nap! Ha ha! I got my stockpile ready? Do you?

When feeling sorry for your self because you have to hear a little bang sound just be thankful that the sound isn't followed buy a whiz sound made be the slug from a bullet that is rapidly approaching you. That is the bang sounds our soldiers are putting up with so we can celebrate the 4th( for a little while longer anyway). The Russians use to spy on us to find ways to win the cold war against us and make us communists now they spy on us to get tips on how to be that.

FarmRaised,
Yep. Fun, right? I guess the site saves a copy of the original image you upload as well as a thumbnail (48x48) version. Helpful if you can't make-out someone's picture.

Also, the photos seem to stay on the Gazette's server, so even after you change your pic you can still reference old pictures that you uploaded if you remember their links. I don't know how long the pictures will stay out there though.
