Business owners on the north end of Commercial Street are the first to be affected by the city’s massive project of replacing the 100-year-old water main running through downtown. The project is designed to be completed three street blocks at a time, according to Casey Woods, director of Emporia Main Street.
Woods has been active in making sure downtown business owners and managers understand the scope of the project and how it will affect them. He’s coordinated meetings with city officials and project engineers, and Emporia Main Street’s website is filled with copies of plans and schedules.
On Monday, crews were busy in the 1100 block of Commercial Street, removing pavement, digging trenches and reinforcing them so work could begin on a new main. According to Woods, the new main will be installed on the east side of the street down to the 300 block, where it will flip to the west side of the street. By doing that, traffic can still move on Commercial Street throughout the construction and parking will only be lost on one side of the street.

That boring machine at 12th is huge!
This project will be cheap entertainment for the kids/grandkids.
