Emporia High School seniors Kathryn Scherich and Drew Bonnet finished 17th at the National Catholic Forensics League national debate championship held recently in Omaha.
Senior McKenna LeClear also was a national medalist at the contest, according to forensics coach Scott Bonnet. LeClear was the Kansas 5A state champion and placed 25th at Omaha.
“The national ranking was made all the more impressive because she battled with illness and a hoarse voice throughout the competition,” Bonnet said.
The national medal was LeClear’s second.
Scherich and Bonnet had four wins in the preliminary competition, with their only loss coming to Loyola high School of Baltimore, Md.
Their elimination rounds loss was to Sioux Falls, S.D.
EHS has placed a team in the top 20 at the NCFL tournament in four of the last five years, Bonnet said.
