Rabies in Chase Co.
Thursday, June 3, 2010
Tests have confirmed a case of rabies in Chase County, according to an announcement from Emporia Veterinary Hospital.
Dr. Scott Gordon submitted a calf for testing by Kansas State University Rabies laboratory in Manhattan. The calf tested positive on May 28, and was the second case of rabies confirmed in Chase County this year.
The lab recommended that all dogs, cats, ferrets, horses, and valuable livestock be vaccinated against rabies, and advised children and adults not to handle or feed wild animals, or unfamiliar animals. If bitten, seek appropriate medical attention immediately. If an animal is bitten, contact a veterinarian for advice.

People need to realize rabies is always present even if cases aren't confirmed. It's way cheaper to get your pets vaccinated than pay for the shots to a person if they get exposed. You can just get the rabies shot at the vet and it's about $20. I've tried to stress to my kid that a wild animal that doesn't run away is a sick animal. Telling him he may have to get lots of shots if he touches it seems to be a good discouragement. :)
