Explosion takes ninth

The Chase County Explosion U-14 softball team finished ninth in the 79-team USSSA Class B Central Division World Series in Independence, Mo. to finish its season. The Explosion opened the tournament last Tuesday with a 12-3 win against the St. Louis Crush.
Taylor Heins had six strikeouts in the circle in the Explosion’s second game, a 4-0 win against the Nebraska Aftershock. In its final game of pool play, the Explosion beat the Rochester (Minn.) Royals by a score of 3-0. Heins struck out 14 of the 21 batters she faced.
The Explosion opened bracket play by beating the Dirt Devils, a team from Illinois, 8-0. Megan Jirak and Danae Bina each had two hits in the win. Chase County’s run continued with a 10-2 win against the Missouri War Cats. The Explosion then beat the Outrage, a team from Kentucky, thanks to an RBI single from Brianna Potter in the ninth inning.
Team Nebraska beat Chase County 5-1 to knock the Explosion out of the winners’ bracket. A loss to the Columbia (Mo.) Lightning then ended the Explosion season.
