Supports Barnett

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

During my first few years as a school principal at Medicine Lodge, Robert Dole stopped by to visit with me about the federal money that was given to education to assist with science and mathematics. About 10 years later, I was then assistant superintendent for the Dodge City schools and had the opportunity to visit Washington, D.C. This conference was a real eye opener to the role of the federal government in education.

This experience was very beneficial to the 42 years I served as a school administrator.

I urged Jim Barnett to file for the local school board in Emporia. He was very effective. He later was elected as a state senator. I served on the state board of education and had the pleasure of working with him.

I believe he deserves the opportunity to serve as our Congressman for the First District.

He is a friend to education and the taxpayers of Kansas.

Harold Hosey

Emporia, former superintendent at Emporia and Dodge City

I'm not sure what the writer means when he states that Sen. Barnett is a friend to education and Kansas taxpayers. Frankly, I have no idea what Jim Barnett believes. He has been praised as a common-sense moderate, but he has surely run a lot of commercials to appease the far right voters. His campaign website speaks in platitudes, not in details.

Barnett hardly distinguished himself in the Kansas Legislature or in his ill-fated bid for governor. Too often, Barnett ignored the real issues Kansans face and instead proposed needless legislation in the Legislature.

If Barnett wins the Republican primary, he might consider informing the public on what he believes and what he will do for the Kansans of the 1st District.
