Two Lyon County 4-H shooting project members helped the Kansas shooting-sports team place well at the 4-H National Shooting Sports Invitational, a weeklong event that began in late June in Kerrville, Texas.
Megan Hilbish, 14, and Danny Anderson, 16, qualified for the team at the end of state competitions. The top four qualifiers were chosen to take part in the national event.
Megan, who was age-eligible for the first time, competed in smallbore .22 rifle in Kerrville; Danny shot in air pistol. They can compete nationally only once in each shooting-sport category.
Megan is a daughter of Bev and John Hilbish; Bev Hilbish is a rifle instructor and, with Deb Ikerd, is co-coordinator of the shooting sports program for 4-H.
Danny is the son of Linda and Greg Anderson.
The Kansas team came home with a fourth-place overall finish among 31 teams — impressive, considering that the Kansas team was not able to compete in every event because it does not offer each of the disciplines factored into the scores.
The invitational had not begun well, Bev Hilbish said, despite the shooting range’s setting in what she described as beautiful country and rolling hillsides.
