Multiple felony charges have been filed in Lyon County District Court in an armed robbery case that culminated in a host of law enforcement officers surrounding the Linden Apartments, 822 Merchant St., early Friday morning, until suspects could be negotiated out of the building.
Three suspects — Wyatt Lee Huber, Terrell A. Todd, and Stephanie Rose Rumold — each were charged with a total of 15 counts on Tuesday in the clerk of the district court’s office.
Each is charged with:
• two counts of aggravated burglary
• four counts of aggravated robbery
• two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon
• two counts of criminal damage to property, less than $1,000 each count
• criminal threat
• two counts of conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery
• kidnapping
The charges arose after the trio allegedly threatened residents of two homes as the accused stole cash and household items at 420 Neosho St. shortly after midnight on July 9, and at 801 W. Seventh Ave., around 3:30 a.m. the same day.
Police Sgt. Carlton Heller located a vehicle belonging to Rumold in the parking lot of the Linden Apartments soon after the second robbery.
By the time the incident ended around 9 a.m. that day, public safety officers from the police department, Lyon County Sheriff’s office, Emporia-Lyon County Ambulance Service and city and county K-9 units had surrounded the apartment. EPD’s special response team entered the building, which had been evacuated as officers negotiated to coax suspects from an apartment where they were staying.
According to an affidavit filed by Police Det. Dennis Delmott, the three were armed with a baseball bat, a golf club and what is believed to have been a “butterfly”-style knife when they entered the first home.
The victim told police she was asleep in her bedroom in the basement when she was awakened by a white man armed with a baseball bat.
“She said she was taken upstairs where she saw two other males, one white and one black,” the affidavit stated.
The second white male demanded money and took her downstairs to get money from her purse.
“She said the heavier-set white male had a knife with him at the time and he stuck it in the ceiling of her bedroom, causing damage (a hole),” the affidavit said.
The men took approximately $50 from her sons’ bedroom.
The suspects are accused of taking a Panasonic DVD player, a 32-inch Samsung LCD HDTV and a Compaq desktop computer.
During the robbery, one of the suspects broke glass doors on an entertainment center and the front-door glass window of the home as they left.
One of the sons said that breaking the glass in the entertainment center in his room “was done for intimidation. One of the suspects stated they might be back,” the affidavit said.
The second robbery was reported at 3:31 a.m. on June 9. The 68-year-old victim called police after the intruders left her home.
She said the robbers were a white male, white female and a black male.
“(The victim) said she had been in bed when she heard someone come in her front door and say, ‘Grandma.’ Someone told her to turn on the lights, which she did, thinking a grandchild had come to her home,” the affidavit said. “Once the light was on, she saw they were not her grandchildren.
“(The victim) was told she would be killed if she called police,” the affidavit said.
She glanced at the clock and saw it was 2:10 a.m.
The second victim told police that the suspects moved her around her home as they ransacked the place, and threatened to kill her if she did not do what they told her.
She said the suspects took her to her car at one point “because they were going to take her someplace but they changed their mind and returned her to the house,” the affidavit stated.
“The two suspect(s) had her lay on the floor and they placed a sofa over her and a recliner next to the sofa to obstruct her vision,” Delmott said in the affidavit. “While under the sofa, a white female entered the room. (She) could see the white female and believed the female to be the daughter of a cousin. ...”
The woman said that approximately $60 was taken from her purse, as well as 30 VHS movies, a 41- or 42-inch flat-screen HDTV, a Verizon cell phone and unspecified prescription medications. The recliner was broken, as were several glass picture frames.
She said that the white man also had taken the key to her vehicle and believed it had been passed to the black suspect.
“(The victim) mentioned something being held against her neck but was unsure what the object had been,” the affidavit said.
After Heller located a vehicle matching the description of Rumold’s vehicle, he looked inside and saw a golf club on the backseat and a video game controller on the back floorboard.
Further investigation revealed a 32-inch Samsung television in a Dumpster across the alley from the Linden Apartments building. The serial number on the TV matched the set taken from 420 Neosho St.
A short time later, Stephanie Rumold came out of her apartment, was contacted and read her Miranda rights, the affidavit stated.
“Rumold stated she has lived in the apartment for approximately six weeks with her boyfriend, Wyatt Lee Huber,” the affidavit stated.
Rumold told police that Huber, 19, and Todd Terrell, who turned 19 today, started talking that night about robbing someone to get money.
She told police that the men were drinking vodka and beer and were “messed up,” the affidavit said.
She told officers that they all usually carry knives with him and that a fourth person gave everyone gloves he had gotten from his place of employment.
They wore bandanas so they wouldn’t be recognized, she said.
Rumold said she parked her vehicle down the street from 420 Neosho St. and waited in the car while Terrell, Huber, and a third man went into the house. When they returned to the vehicle, she remembered they had a TV and some cash, which was split among the men, according to the affidavit.
“She was told that the twins had woken up during their time in the house. She said someone told them to go back to sleep and they did. Soneone stated to (the victim) ‘if you say a word I’m going to cut your throat,’” the affidavit stated.
They returned to The Linden and the third man went to sleep because he had to go to work. Terrell, Huber and Rumold went to a different apartment and began to drink again.
After about 30 minutes, Rumold reportedly said in the affidavit, “Huber was really ‘pumped up.’ Huber stated that he wanted to ‘hit’ another house.
“Rumold stated that Huber wanted to make the news. He talked about burning houses down. Rumold stated she told him, ‘No, families live there.’”
Instead, they went to the second house for another robbery, the affidavit said.
Terrell came out carrying a flat-screen TV that he tried to put into the backseat of Rumold’s car.
“Todd told Rumold that Huber had a knife at the throat of the female ... in the house,” the affidavit said. He said he was not able to get a computer out of the house, so “Rumold stated she is pretty good with computers so she volunteered to go in and get it.”
Rumold described the scene inside the house as looking “like a tornado (had) gone through.”
“She also stated that Huber was having ‘grandma’ walk through the house with her hands clasped behind the back of her head,” Delmott wrote in the affidavit. “Huber told Rumold later that he was trying to scare ‘grandma’ by throwing things around as he walked through the house.”

maddysmommy....Its appears by your post that you are about as bright as your friends, its probably that baby and dumb luck that prevented you from being their female accomplice. You really want to defend the actions of these degenerate a**holes with your broken english, go ahead. You could at least do it anonymously so everyone doesn't know how smart you are.

FarmRaised, Sorry to break the news but the taxpayers already paid for the prenatal care, delivery and any followup care for the scumbag's baby and his baby's mama. Taxpayers are providing welfare for this scumbag's baby and his baby's mama. And now, the taxpayers will continue to support this scumbag's baby and baby's mama while he is living the dream with his criminal buddies in prison.
It must be nice to get the taxpayers to pay all the necessities so you can use your own money for a computer and internet access. Or do we taxpayers provide that too?

Ya, Let them try that at my house. There would be a funeral this week for 3 idiots. If you do not want people talking down on your babies daddy, maybe he should learn to RESPECT the honest citizens how live and contribute good things to this community that YOU get to raise this child in.
WOW, What nerve you have to even post on here to support them. Did you listen to the victims? Did you hear their FEAR for their lives? Their childrens lives? The disrespect shown to them during the crimes? Maybe you need to grow up, learn what you need to bring your child up knowing right from wrong. You need to learn the same it sounds like to me.
WOW....I'm really ticked.....I'm outa here before I say whats REALLY on my mind!

First of all, maddysmommy09... learn to spell, read and write. Second of all, no, I wouldn't want someone doing this to me or my family. And when I say THIS, I mean breaking into my home, threatening my child, stealing my possessions no matter how little they may be worth. Of course people are going to talk bad about them on here...
THEY ROBBED FAMILIES AND THREATENED TO KILL PEOPLE!!!!
Some people are so stupid. I agree with FarmRaised. Hope SRS will give you food stamps and cash assistance, because your "baby daddy" isn't going to support your child while sitting in prison.

Am I mistaken or did maddysmommy in her brilliant use of the English language threaten us all with breaking and entering by this group of criminal punks?
Tell you what maddysmommy, you break in to my house and you'll be met with more than you can ever imagine. You may even meet your maker. But then again, when you do meet your maker, will you be able to plead your case using the correct language?
Go back to school!

Now lets not insult people due to your lack of knowledge, I do not believe for a second that this is the exact way it played out. I've heard both sides of the story and I know the people personally, they are not criminals. That girl he was with was nothing more than a snitch and liar who wanted to get out of trouble, so don't throw around words like idiots on a subject you're ignorant about. Appreciate it. :P

So let me get this straight......People who are not criminals always go around snitching others out to stay out of trouble themselves then are robbed in retribution by the person they snitched on........
OK....sounds like a completely normal lifestyle to me........NOT!!!!
Not only sounds criminal to me ......it also sounds dumb. It's one thing to be a criminal.....it's quite another to be a dumb one. The dumb ones give the others a bad name. The really smart criminals you never hear about (unless they write their memoirs) because they never get caught.

I am thankful to the person that brought this story back up, (the day after Thanksgiving Day).
It proves to me that I am NOT the stupidest person in Emporia.
I just keep re-reading a couple of the responses on here shaking my head and wondering, just how much of our taxpayer dollars have been wasted on these illiterate deadbeats?
I am all for helping out those less fortunate than me, but maddysmommy09 post makes me want to push for mandatory drug testing on all recipients of any social services, and maybe even mandatory schooling.
I hate to think how that child is being raised.

Perhaps you can enlighten us on what we are missing here. Every thing I read in the above story appeared very much like a bunch of clowns setting around drinking and getting high until they didn't have enough sense to find their butts using both hands. Then these three brain trusts....in their enlightened state.......go out to terrorize a couple of women so they can steal some used Wal-Mart treasures......which they then haul around in the vehicle and keep at their house until they get caught with it.
So read up on it as I might, what I still see is a couple of the worst kind of criminals....ignorant ones. If you have any information that is not contained in the article that might change my mind please feel free to share it with me.
As far as maddysmommy09 is concerned, her post speaks for itself. It needs no further elaboration except to say that the person who spoke the worst about maddysmommy was maddysmommy herself. She didn't need any help from anybody else.

FlySoLo,
I did not say I was the smartest person in Emporia, I said I was NOT the stupidest.
That title would be awarded to anyone named in the above story, or those defending the illegal actions of the above.
Single mothers? I don't "bad talk" them all. I know more than a few that are raising their kids by themselves, and are doing a fine job of it. This does not appear to be the case of maddysmommy09. Enlighten me if I am wrong.
True, I only know one part of the story, the part that was published, and the resulting comments.
Each is charged with:
• two counts of aggravated burglary
• four counts of aggravated robbery
• two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon
• two counts of criminal damage to property, less than $1,000 each count
• criminal threat
• two counts of conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery

What part of the story is NOT being told?
Again, Please enlighten us?
Please re-read the story and maddysmommy09 post that tries to defend one of alleged criminals. Read it as if you were not related to any of the named "alleged".
You would have to admit that it is all pretty sad.
And so is maddysmommy09's post.

I'm sorry your friend got caught up in something like this but whether or not he was talked into it is totally irrelevant as it concerns his guilt or innocence. The only thing that might change is his chance to rehabilitate himself. I hope it does.
But even crime, is not crime, is not crime. Some crimes are looked at differently than others. Pedophilia and other crimes against children are the worst.....but not far behind that are crimes committed by young men against old women. I mean what kind of a man can have any respect for himself when he targets those that are are least able to resist.
I have done things in my life of which I am now ashamed. But I can stand before man and God and say that I never hurt any child or old person whether intentionally or otherwise. Even people involved in criminal activity should have honor. If your friend can learn that he has hope for a better future....If he can't, then he is no more than what most of us here believe him to be......a total loser.
