Charges filed in armed robbery

Wednesday, July 14, 2010

Multiple felony charges have been filed in Lyon County District Court in an armed robbery case that culminated in a host of law enforcement officers surrounding the Linden Apartments, 822 Merchant St., early Friday morning, until suspects could be negotiated out of the building.

Three suspects — Wyatt Lee Huber, Terrell A. Todd, and Stephanie Rose Rumold — each were charged with a total of 15 counts on Tuesday in the clerk of the district court’s office.

Each is charged with:

F two counts of aggravated burglary

F four counts of aggravated robbery

F two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon

F two counts of criminal damage to property, less than $1,000 each count

F criminal threat

F two counts of conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery

F kidnapping

The victim told police she was asleep in her bedroom in the basement when she was awakened by a white man armed with a baseball bat.

“She said she was taken upstairs where she saw two other males, one white and one black,” the affidavit stated.

The second white male demanded money and took her downstairs to get money from her purse.

“She said the heavier-set white male had a knife with him at the time and he stuck it in the ceiling of her bedroom, causing damage (a hole),” the affidavit said.

The men took approximately $50 from her sons’ bedroom.

The suspects are accused of taking a Panasonic DVD player, a 32-inch Samsung LCD HDTV and a Compaq desktop computer.

During the robbery, one of the suspects broke glass doors on an entertainment center and the front-door glass window of the home as they left.

One of the sons said that breaking the glass ion the entertainment center in his room “was done for intimidation. One of the suspects stated they might be back,” the affidavit said.

The second robbery was reported at 3:31 a.m. on June 9. The 68-year-old victim called police after the intruders left her home.

She said the robbers were a white male, white female and a black male.

“(The victim) said she had been in bed when she heard someone come in her front door and say, ‘Grandma.’ Someone told her to turn on the lights, which she did, thinking a grandchild had come to her home,” the affidavit said. “Once the light was one, she saw they were not her grandchildren.

“(The victim) was told she would be killed if she called police,” the affidavit said.

She glanced at the clock and saw it was 2:10 a.m.

The second victim told police that the suspects moved her around her home as they ransacked the place, and threatened to kill her if she did not do what they told her.

She said the suspects took her to her car at one point “because they were going to take her someplace but they changed their mind and returned her to the house,” the affidavit stated.

“The two suspect(s) had her lay on the floor and they placed a sofa over her and a recliner next to the sofa to obstruct her vision,” Delmott said in the affidavit. “While under the sofa, a white female entered the room. (She) could see the white female and believed the female to be the daughter of a cousin. ...”

The woman said that approximately $60 was taken from her purse, as well as 30 VHS movies, a 41- or 42-inch flat-screen HDTV, a Verison cell phone and unspecified prescription medications. The recliner was broken, as were several glass picture frames.

She said that the white man also had taken the key to her vehicle and believed it had been passed to the black suspect.

“(The victim) mention something being held against her neck but was unsure what the object had been,” the affidavit said.

I have been reading the comments made here for a few days now. It is a shame that so many people have made themselves judge and jury. You don't know these people or the circumstances. You do not know how hard it is for the families of these people to not only have their loved ones accused of such a crime, but to have so many uninformed people, commenting on what they only know from what the media writes. You are not judge and jury, God forbid that any of you with such a negative attitude would be called for that honorable position. I will pray for you at the same time I am praying for these young adults who have lost their way.

Apparantely, these young adults were never shown the " right and proper " way in the first place .

It is really hard to feel sorry for anyone who is caught in the act.....just my opinion. I sure hope they are not allowed to plead to lesser charges. If in fact they are guilty......

Of course, they'll plead to lesser charges. That's standard procedure in Lyon County, overcharge and plea out.

What I do know from the charges filed with the court, is that they were out for some thrills, by robbing people and threatening them with harm. It even says that they were wanting to burn some houses down, from some of the other articles.
What I do know is that this doesn't seem to be some misunderstanding. I do know that I care more about the victims than I do the criminals or the criminals' families. The criminals' families will have to get over themselves. They victimized and terrorized other people, willingly and willfully, they did it for fun and thrills, that I do believe. I cannot believe for a minute that they didn't mean to do it, or that their is even a remotely excuseable reason to have done this.

Right is right and wrong is wrong. This was WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!!

WOW! You just can't be any stupider than this, Emporia's dumbest "criminals" Were the VHS tapes worth it? Seriously are these 3 mentally challenged? If you do the crime, you do the time. If you feel so bad for the 3 idiots who did these crimes and threatened and terrorized the victims and their children and want to cry and pray for the perpetrators and their families, you are just as much of a dumbass as they are. I don't feel sorry for them one bit, I do feel bad for the innocent victims who had their homes ransacked and were threatened with their lives because of 3 losers were "pumped up" and wanted to terrorize innocent people.

To all who are responding my previous comment, I am speaking more of the suspects family than the suspects, yet, you continue to act like you were there as witness to what happened instead of reading in the newspaper. I do not know what happened nor am I friend or relative to any of the suspects, but am not going to condemn or demean a person until the facts are in. The facts are not necessarily what the media reports. I do also want to point out that very few, if any of you who are commenting have the guts to use your real name, when posting a comment. It seems to me that if you are willing to condemn a person when you do not know any of the actual circumstances, that you could at least be bold enough to identify yourselves.

I happen to know one of the accused's family. The accused was brought up right, they just refused to listen and learn. I don't feel sorry for any of the accused, I am sure they knew what they were doing is wrong. Please don't be so quick to blame everything on the upbringing. A parent is only able to teach right from wrong, it is up to the child as they get old enough, to decide which path they want to go down.

yep , janie, they lost their way, but I do hope that they are able to find their way now, the first thing they will do find the lord, always happens to these type of punks when they get their asses thrown in prison, they think that some one will forgive them, you will I WILL NOT, they are lucky to even be alive, some would of just shot them and then called the cops, see how lucky your friends are?? damn it was your lucky day also

This may be a "media report" but it is quoting the affidavit that was filed. Now I realize that sometimes the way the reporter pulls out info or the way the officer worded it can misrepresent a situation to a small degree, but essentially, it is what happened according to the witnesses. People here are commenting on witness testimony more than a "media report."

I guess that there are people that belive everything that is written as the gospil truth and that there is never any added material when the papers write the column. And trying to blame the family's of the accused is not right. I hope that one of your family members never have any charges brought against them, but if they do, you can blame yourself... Right or wrong

First of all I don't think anyone is blaming or talking about their family. They were busted red-handed. They had to be talked out of the apartment by police officers....I think that the only thing we can all agree on is that if they are found guilty we can only hope that the punishment fits the crime.

Sherryh, I do agree with you. I do know for a fact that stephanie came out as soon as the police showed up and confessed on the spot and did not have to be talked out. The other two are the ones that needed to be talked out of the apartments.

Funny that the only one who even brought up the criminal's families was janetharris. For the most part, almost everyone has a "black sheep" in the family. The point is the rest of the family shouldn't take it personally. The criminal's themselves are solely responsible for their actions, and their actions were heinous. No one is disputing that they broke in to other people's houses. That is more than enough for me to know what kind of people we are dealing with.
Everybody needs to drop this "blame the family" hogwash. It seems that someone is trying to make something out of nothing. The criminals are to blame end of story.

ok just to clear a few things up, i am related to one of the suspects and one of the victims and if you cant figure it out it means they are related to. who ever asked how old they were, their all approximatley 20. and no they are not "mentally challenged". and it is not the families fault for you information the suspect that i am related to has had plenty of help and guidance and just choses not listen. and im not sticking up for any of them i dont feel bad for them even if one of them is related to me, they all had a choice. they all made the wrong one. they knew the peoples houses they were breaking into, it was all planned out. i'm not saying anyone was but id apprciate it if people didnt blame it on their familes cuz i sure as hell didnt have anything to do with it im not the one who made that decession and i am family.

Old enough to know right from wrong.
Old enought to be charged, judged, convicted, sentenced and punished as adults.
Old enough to do adult time .
However, as things go and have gone around here, lately, I have my doubts that any of these so called young adults will recieve any more than a slap on the wrist or rump and sent back out to menace anyone they choose to menace.
The problem with the " young adults " , children of today is, the fact that their parents, teachers, family, etc. aren' t allowed to discipline these so called " futures " of humanity . I, and probably a lot of you, who are of the older persuasion, no doubt, can remember when we were disciplined ( taught, right from wrong ) . Today, especially in the U.S., it has become an actual crime, to use " corporal punishment " as a means of a parent/family to teach/punish the children/young adults for doing wrong and learning right from wrong . And the result of all the molly coddling of todays children/young adults is the making of the most young criminals in history. Instead of really punishing them for their wrong doings, indescretions, this " handle with kid gloves " approach may just possibly be the making of " future criminals " and be part of what is responsible for " repeat offenders" and jail and prison overcrowding .
I can tell you this, I went through and endured my share of corporal punishment at the hands of my parents and family and yes even my teachers. And yet I did not think any less of them for it, as I knew I deserved it. And I felt no less love for my parents, family or teachers for it and even though my parents and most of those who did punish me have been gone for some time now, I still love them with all my heart, as they were my mentors and taught me well. I can also proudly say that I have never been arrested or been in trouble with the law or been incarcerated in my almost 70 years of life. And I can say with pride, that because I was taught, by my parents and family that doing wrong means punishment, sometimes severe punishment and doing right, respecting others and their property no matter who they may be and above all respecting the law and abiding by the law is the right thing to do and will always usually bring praise and reward in the end .

Ok so i personally know two of the suspects. One was a total shocker. The black male talked about in this post from what ive seen was usually chill and no drama. The female i will personally say is a dumbass. The only reason she went along with this crap is cause she follows all her bfs. either way i hope to god they get sent to prison and on another note. all the prison time they r doin really dont think it was worth it since they only got 100 dollars a few vhs tapes and a couple small t.v.s so way to go steph and terrell u guys r winners!!!!!

The mental distress they put on their victims should be more than enough reason to put them behind bars, not the measley pile of contraband they accumulated. To have the mental capability to pull off a crime like this is dispicable. Thank God they were caught before they pulled off another one (and they would have) before someone got hurt.
