Area residents and truckers from across the country will have access to a new Denny’s restaurant expected to open here in February 2011.
The restaurant is one of several changes planned at the Flying J, 4215 W. Highway 50, as a result of a merger between the company and Pilot Travel Centers LLC of Knoxville, Tenn.
A building permit sold this month by the City of Emporia shows the cost of the local project at $300,000.

I'll really get excited if Panera's builds a store here.
I wonder why the donut makers don't learn how to make bagels or really good French bread?

Good idea, create. There's only maybe one place you can get decent bread here.Funny the donut shops won't go for that idea. The problem 'maybe' is the length of the commercial oven and the lawyers. It couldn't be done by a franchise.

I thought I would share something awesome that just happened for Emporia... A national biking magazine called XXC started writing some articles about this year's Dirty Kanza bike race. So many articles and fantastic pictures were submitted that they created an entire issue dedicated specifically to the DK200. So, a few hundred bucks and A LOT of effort between different sets of volunteers got Emporia on the map nationally with an entire magazine dedicated to this community's race! Steve, thanks so much for the post. Fabulous. And to think, it didn't even cost ten thousand dollars for a one time ad to put Emporia on the map!
Priceless!

Matt, thanks for your post too. I thought this worth repeating from the magazine article:
"That is where I am today, looking my mountain dead in the face. I will attempt to scale it four days from the day I am
typing this. My mountain’s name is the Dirty Kanza 200. It is a 200 mile gravel endurance race through the Flint Hills
of Kansas. Doesn’t sound like much of a mountain you say? Factor in the large amount of hills, high winds, heat, razor
sharp flint rock and the vast isolation of the area and that is one large metaphorical mountain. I hope to have a good report about it in the next issue."
Vast isolation. I love it.
