EDITOR’S NOTE: Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. The following folks deserve a pat on the back ...
Clint Bowyer, who is proposing to build a multipurpose building on the Lyon County Fairgrounds through his 79 Fund.
- Sarah Schmidt of Junction City, who is so committed to playing softball that she travels to Emporia twice a week to practice with the Emporia Energy U18 team. And kudos to Coach Jeff Lynch and the other players for welcoming her.
- David Fralic, new manager of the Emporia Country Club, who is making some changes as the club approaches its 100th anniversary.
- Organizers of the annual Olpe Downhome festival, which begins at 6 a.m. Saturday with breakfast at the United Methodist Church.
- Emporia High pitcher Jacob Loucks, who accepted an unexpected offer from Ottawa University to play college baseball.
- Emporia’s American Legion AAA baseball team, which won the Winget Memorial tournament in Bartlesville, Okla.
- Former CASA volunteer Eric Bruessing, who helped an Ottawa family adopt a boy with which he was working. Bruessing was with the family every step of the way, which took nearly three years.
- Dorothy Matile, who donated money for two dog runs at the Emporia Animal Shelter as a memorial to her husband and son.

Here's hoping Clint finishes the next race not upside down or on fire (for a change).
