Woman taken to hospital following house fire

Monday, July 5, 2010

An early morning house fire sent one woman to the hospital early this morning after she became trapped due to smoke in her home at 2092 Buttonwood.

Sgt. Carlton Heller of the Emporia Police Department said the call came in at 4:02 a.m. this morning. Emporia Police officers arrived on scene and were able to get the woman out of the home. The woman was taken to Newman Regional Health for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Details as to what caused the fire are not available at this time and will be released as they become available.

I hope she's all right, but judging from the nubs of spent fireworks that were hitting my windows last night, I'm not surprised.

But by golly, we've got to have fireworks in the city, yes indeed!

Yeah, I'm making an assumption here that this fire was caused by fireworks, but in view of the holiday, it's an easy one to make. If I'm wrong, I'll apologize.

GOODONE (anonymous) says...

Well create, you can start apologizing because it had nothing to do with fireworks. It amazes me how so many people on here jump to conclusions and know absolutely nothing about what's going on.Apparently you woke up today just hoping to find that there was a fire or some other incident that you could blame on fireworks so you can argue a case against fireworks in the city limits. Seriously?????

Thank you, GOODONE. I apologize for being one of those idiots that jump to conclusions. I knew "absolutely nothing about what's going on."

Happy? Never let it be said that I just jab and run. I'll stand my ground when necessary and I'll apologize when I make a mistake too. Here, let me yell it. I APOLOGIZE. I MADE A MISTAKE BY JUMPING TO A CONCLUSION!!!

Got anything to say about the black nubs I found on the ground beneath my windows this morning?

Oh yeah, I'll continue to argue against fireworks in the city.

One more thing GOODONE, you did a little jumping to a conclusion yourself when you said, "Apparently you woke up today just hoping to find that there was a fire or some other incident that you could blame on fireworks so you can argue a case against fireworks in the city limits."

Apparently? Who's calling the kettle black now? How the hell do you know how I woke up this morning?

Seriously???????

I believe I will wait for the official report on the cause of the fire before I make any judgements. create, I would only apologize, after a cause of the fire had been absolutely determined .
G00DONE, if it is determined that the fire was caused by fireworks, would you/will you also issue an apology to create for your rant against her ? I would certainly hope so .

Also, the story says, " Details as to what caused the fire are not available at this time and will be released as they become available."
So, GOODONE, if the authorities do not know the cause of the fire yet, how is it you are so sure it was not caused by fireworks ? Just curious.

Steve_Corbin, how very beautiful, was at the time and still holds true. Create, I so agree with Emporia allowing fireworks within the city limits. Fireworks seem to go with our National History and the 4th of July plus this is giving back some control of our lives. Do I truly care for the banging of the fireworks, no, but freedom, yes, trash, no. Guess we can be thankful it only occurs a couple times a year. YES! I'm very thankful when I see a New Year!!!! :-)

Steve, I'm not against celebrating our national history, just not inside city limits where fools and drunks have control over fireworks that go every which way including toward my house. Like I said, were it not raining, I'd have worried more about my roof. So I should be thankful my house is put in jeopardy only once or twice a year? Hardly.

joecitizen, yes, I figured he might be a fireman and might know. He got his apology because I am a real woman. A real man would have accepted it.

Well, I for one hated the fact that fireworks were allowed in town, for several reasons. First, my house was splattered with fireworks from front and back, family behind me had been drinking all day and then shot off fireworks for 2 hours straight, most of them landing on our house and in the trees. Thankfully it had rained and there was alot of moisture, but I do believe if it was dry out, like most July's are, there would have been fires reported.

Secondly, The horrible smell of sulfar all over town was sickening. I stepped outside about 11pm last night and had to go back inside because the air was clouded and filled with firework smoke. The sulfar smell was nasty to breathe.

Now maybe some of you didnt have a problem with neighbors, but let me say that I live on a side of town where at least 6 houses on every block near us were shooting them off at the same time. The smoke and sulfur smell was unreal most of the evening.

The poor animals (Dogs) that were left outside in pens, poor things, I seen so many while driving around, just pacing their pens scared to death. I for one brought mine inside after seeing her panic, freaking out scared behavior, some dogs were not so lucky.

I say fireworks in city limits....NO MORE PLEASE>

Create, You say "I'm not against celebrating our national history, just not inside city limits where fools and drunks have control over fireworks that go every which way including toward my house."

So it's OK with you if all the "city folk" come out into the county EVERY YEAR, and let us deal with it??? I think it's only fair that folks in the city get to deal with it, like us county folks have been dealing with it for years.

It's funny how many people complain about losing their freedoms, until they think it impacts them. Then they are sooo ready for restrictions, laws etc. I don't know, maybe we should just ban fireworks all together, huh??

I am wondering just which " NATIONAL " history is being celebrated with fire works ? I say this because how many people refer to themselves as " American " now-a-days, instead of Mexican American, German American, Arab American, Chinese American, etc., etc.. How many of these " something Americans" are proud enough to refer to themselves as " Americans ", without a national/nationality reference before " American " .

As you should be irish, and I am proud to be Native American and Canadian, but I am an American first and a proud American at that, but I do not go around saying or thinking I am a Canadian, Native American, I am first and formost and always will be an American and as such I am also proud of my heritage. I just don' t throw it in peoples faces all the time. Why can' t people be proud of being an American and still be proud of their heritage, without all the hoop la of anouncing your heritage along with being an American, silly, silly, silly . When you take the oath of enlistment in the armed forces you don' t say you will defend the Constitution of the United States of America, not the United States of Irish America, Mexican America, African America, etc. etc. it is just " The United States of America .
The founders of this Country, America, were mostly of British ( English ) heritage and yet they did not call this Country, " The United British State of America " or " The United British States of America . The very first sentence of the immigrant affirmation oath is as follows, "I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; " .
Do you know what this part of the oath means ?
You or anyone can be proud of your heritage, but as I said before, you do not have to " flaunt " it all the time, with flags, etc., if you want to be an American citizen then be an American citizen and nothing else .
Boy, irish, you just can' t stop looking or begging for a confrontation or fight with me can you ? Take a drink, chill out, and repeat after me, I am an American, I am an American, I am an American. You may feel better. Have a good day in Emporia, fellow American, ooops, I forget Irish American .

gooseylucy, You're right to be upset about having borne this fireworks burden all these years. I have always thought that was so unfair to you because there are so many inconsiderate people setting off fireworks, in the country, in the city.

I'd be happy if they set aside one place and one place only for setting off fireworks. No, not in the country. How about the fairgrounds? I

Meth, super job! When I spoke of "National History" that is exactly what I ment, history of the United States of America" not of other lands. Our forefathers ALL came from other lands to build a new land, a land of FREEDOM! My blood may have blood that originally came from other lands but YES! I am an American and very proud of that fact. Much American blood has been spilled for that FREEDOM and continues to do so, that blood is AMERICAN! Let FREEDOM RING in Emporia AND surrounding communities. As I listened the other night to the "bangs" the fireworks made, made me think of our military personel, they hear those bangs but it is being directed towards them and not by accident or in pretty colors.
