Flint Hills Beef Fest Carcass awards results

Saturday, January 30, 2010

The annual Flint Hills Beef Fest Feedlot and Carcass Awards supper was held on Jan. 23 at the Granada Theatre in Emporia.

“The Flint Hills Beef Fest is a celebration of the grass and cattle industry,” a press release stated. “Several contests involving cattle are designed to showcase the quality and economic competitiveness of Flint Hills cattle.”

The event is a wrap-up of the 2009 Flint Hills Beef Fest. Cattle contests go throughout the year.

“The Grass Futurity begins in April followed by the live stocker show held annually the third week in August,” a press release stated. “The Feedlot and Carcass contests follow with a target harvest in mid to late December. Steer and heifer divisions in each contest pay out cash awards for the top five places.”

Winners in the Steer Division Feedlot contest were Kevin Collins and Howard Wittker, Strong City. The Steer Carcass winner was Kent Schade, Olpe. In the Heifer Feedlot contest, Heine Farms of Alma had the winning pen of three heifers. The Heifer Carcass contest was won by Linsey Farms of Lebo.

Parry Briggs of Reading was the winner of the Cattle Marketing contest sponsored by Leffler Commodities. The Cattle Marketing Contest is open to cattle contest participants as well as sponsors from the Flint Hills Beef Fest.

The Feedlot Contest is a weight-gain contest fro cattle coming off grass and going into the feedlot. Final shrunk weight of cattle from the Grass Futurity was the starting weight for the Feedlot Contest. The pen of three head in both the steer and heifer divisions with the highest total gain wins. Cattle were fed for 124 days at Ingalls Feed Yard at Ingalls.

The Carcass Contest is also a judged event. Pens of three head in both divisions are harvested. The pen of three with the highest score wins. Each cattle owner receives all collected data including: dressing percent, rib eye area, marbling score, calculated quality grade, fat thickness, calculated yield grade and internal fat.

The 2010 Flint Hills Beef Fest will be Aug. 20 through the 22. For a complete list of 2009 results as well as an entry and sponsor information for 2010, visit www.beeffest.com. Completed cattle entry forms are requested by April 9, 2010.
