Students from Northern Heights and Lyndon high schools who raised funds for The Lashbrook Family Ministry Orphanage in Haiti. They collected $1,000 from people attending the Flint Hills Shootout basketball tournament.
• Braydon Olinger, Jaden Johnson and Bryan Sandoval, who won their schools geography bees. They will find out later if they qualify for the Kansas competition of the National Geographic Bee on April 9.
• Duane Desmarteau, who was inducted into the Kansas Soccer Hall of Fame.
• The Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce, which handed out awards at its annual meeting. Emporia’s Radio Stations received Business of the Year Award; Brent Windsor was named Volunteer of the Year; Roy Johnson won a Lifetime Achievement Award, and Emporia Clean Sweep won the Committee of the Year Award.
• Luis Batiz, who received the Ray Kroc Award, the highest given by the McDonald’s Corp. The award honors the top 1 percent of managers in the company. Batiz manages the McDonalds on Industrial Road and has been with the company since 2002.
• ESU basketball player Cassondra Boston, who was named the MIAA women’s player of the week for the second time in three weeks.
