Obama urges nervous Dems to fight for his agenda

CHARLES BABINGTON,Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) — Caught between disgruntled voters and a president urging them to press ahead on divisive issues such as health care, Democratic lawmakers must soon decide whether Barack Obama is leading them toward statesmanlike courage or political folly.

Obama used his first State of the Union speech Wednesday to try to hit the reset button on health care and to offer a hodgepodge of tax breaks and other incentives to create new jobs. He mixed overtures with digs toward Republicans. But he mainly addressed fellow Democrats, who still can enact his agenda if they overcome fears fueled by events such as last week's stunning GOP victory in the Massachusetts Senate race.

That setback may have cost Democrats their filibuster-proof Senate majority, Obama said, but "we still have the largest majority in decades, and the people expect us to solve some problems, not run for the hills."

He accepted partial blame for the deep troubles facing his health care push, but he implored lawmakers to finish the task rather than yield to public opposition.

"The longer it was debated, the more skeptical people became," Obama told the joint session of Congress and a nationwide TV audience. But health care problems will continue for millions, he said, and "I will not walk away from these Americans, and neither should the people in this chamber."

House and Senate Democratic leaders are scrambling to see if they can salvage the ambitious health care package, which Republicans almost universally oppose. Obama's pep talk was a call to arms, but he offered no new strategies for overcoming the steep parliamentary and political hurdles they face.

The president devoted most of his 65-minute speech to job-creation proposals, such as eliminating capital gains taxes on small business investment and extending tax breaks for businesses to invest in new plants and equipment. But those proposals also face uncertainty in Congress, where Senate Democrats say they may need a selective, piecemeal approach to win enough votes.

Obama said Republicans share a responsibility for governing, and he proposed meeting with their House and Senate leaders monthly. But his olive branch seemed brittle at times.

Without naming George W. Bush, he pointedly noted that the previous administration left him a big deficit and a deeply troubled economy. For good measure, Obama said the United States killed more al-Qaida terrorists in 2009 than in 2008.

Obama rebuked the Supreme Court for a recent decision that "reversed a century of law to open the floodgates for special interests" and foreign corporations to make unlimited campaign contributions. At that, conservative Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito made a dismissive face, shook his head in disagreement and seemed to mouth the words "not true" as the president spoke.

Republicans in the House chamber generally greeted such remarks with stony gazes and smirks. The statements they issued as soon as Obama finished — or even before he finished, in some cases — were equally icy.

"We had hoped to hear a new commitment to keep his promises to govern from the center, change the tone in Washington, and work with both parties in a bipartisan way to help small businesses create jobs and get our economy moving again," said House Republican Leader John Boehner of Ohio. "Unfortunately, the president and the Democrats in charge of Congress still aren't listening to the American people."

Obama has the luxury of waiting until 2012 to seek re-election, while all 435 House seats and a third of the Senate seats are up for grabs this November. Some Democrats most nervous about the election are urging the administration to slow down, especially on the health care issue that has dominated Congress's attention for months.

Obama gave them no comfort. "Change has not come fast enough" for millions of Americans, he said. "We must answer history's call."

At the same time, however, the president tried to give Democrats some political cover on other sensitive issues, such as the bank bailouts that angered many voters.

"We all hated the bank bailout," he said. "I hated it. You hated it. It was about as popular as a root canal."

The president also tried to chip away at GOP talking points.

"Let me repeat, we cut taxes," he said, citing his administration's tax cuts "for 95 percent of working families."

Republicans are quick to note that the deficit has soared during Obama's year in office, and proposals such as the health care overhaul would impose new taxes on high-end medical insurance policies, among other things.

In their post-speech commentaries, several Democrats ignored nearly all of Obama's remarks except those aimed at creating jobs, the biggest issue on voters' minds.

"His focus was right where it belongs: on jobs and the economy, and on reforming the financial sector," said Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich. "He acknowledged his own mistakes, and he avoided pointing partisan fingers."

Michael Steele, chairman of the Republican National Committee, was less charitable.

If Obama is serious about improving the economy, Steele said, "he will give Republicans a seat at the table. If not, then we know that this is just more spin, arrogance and a refusal to listen to the American people."

I did however, listen this morning to msnbc reporting on it and then turned to fox news and listened to their report. Sounded to me like they covered two different speeches. :>{

the poll question at the beginning of this article should have had:

"THROW ALL THE BUMS OUT"

According to the Republicans, they believe that they need or deserve a seat or more seats at the table . I ask the corrupt Political Parties and their stooges this. Just exactly how many seats at " The Table " do you need or have to occupy, to do whats right and equitable for all of the peoples of this Nation ? Instead, whomever has the seats at the " Table " only do and favor just those people, who pay those with the " Seats At The Table " for your resulting bias, that is skewed, in every aspect, to favor wealthy, influential individuals, corporations, special interests both Foreign and Domestic by continuing to give them an exceedingly, continued unfair advantage, over the rest of the Nations peoples. And it does not matter who has " Seats at the Table " , the partisan bickering continues, because of corruption in our Nations Politics and Government.
All of you political party stooges have had an advantage as to the number of seats at " The Table " , in one way or another for several decades and still have not, cannot or do not desire to do what is best for this Nation and all of its peoples. Hence the current predicament our Nation and its peoples and the world is currently experiencing. And the blame lies at the feet of noone but you the peoples elected representatives, who we, the people, were foolish and naive enough to place our trust in, to do what is right, and best for all of us/the people and the Nation.
It is a sad thing when " Greed " and " Corruption " governs a Nations' any Nations' Government .

I agree with the President, in the fact, that the recent Supreme Court ruling on repealing the cap on what corporations, etc. may spend on Political Advertising was wrong and the Supreme Court overstepped its authority and has actually changed the face of Politics and has gotten involved in Politics, which it is or at least was expressly forbidden to do.
Has the corruption, influence peddling and bias that has been prevailant in the Nations Politics, finally found its way into the Highest Court in the Nation or has the corruption, influence peddling and bias been in the Supreme Court all along and just now rising to show its ugly face ? Hmmmmmmmm !
With the recent Supreme Court rulling, National, State and local Politics will get even more corrupt and uglier .

Right now 39.1 million people are living in poverty...and 40 million on food stamps. This is how the Feds operate--they punish success and reward failure. The truth behind the green agenda and Obama's stimulus bill is that it's about creating a monoply profiteering machine for international bankers. A top German physicent has now stepped forward and debunked the entire AGW global warming theory using the known laws of physics. BRAVO irish! Thank you for stating what I have been trying to say to everyone who b*tches and complains about Obama. McCain wouldn't have done any better, given all that was handed to the new president a year ago. Everyone wants a fast fix, and they want it NOW. Thing is, you can't fix everything in a year people. From the way I see it, Obama is doing the best he can with the options he has. Plain and simple. Will everyone like what he does to try to fix things? No. And I would expect nothing less.

On a similar subject... has anyone seen the article on cnn.com about our government investing $8 billion on a new high-speed train system? Looks like he is trying to do what he can to get our economy growing. The only downside I see to it is that from west of KC to the western seaboard, there are no plans for railways. So if you want to go from Chicago to Denver, you are out of luck. Otherwise, I think it is a great deal... bound to bring new jobs in while they are rebuilding the train lines, laying new ones and even after it is all completed.

The biggest train wreck in history was the real estate bubble, but everybody kept riding that train, agents, buyers, sellers, buying houses, flipping houses, trading stocks, sinking more money than ever into retirement funds, becoming day traders even on their jobs, making equity loans, charging their lives away, etc. etc. etc.

BREAKING NEWS

In case anyone is interested, here's a sub headline and part of this morning's headline news story in the Washington Post:

US economy grew at 5.7% annual rate in the fourth quarter, the highest rate of gross domestic product growth since 2003 and up from 2.2% in the third quarter.

[Did you see that? That's SINCE 2003. I don't know about you complainers, but my portfolio has been growing quite nicely in the past few months. In fact, I've been surprised at the last report I received. Now I know why.]

More from the Washington Post story...

The U.S. economy roared ahead in the final months of 2009, growing at its fastest rate in six years, as corporate America stopped slashing its inventories and again started to invest for the future.

[FASTEST RATE IN SIX YEARS!!!]

Gross domestic product, the broadest measure of economic activity, rose at a 5.7 percent annual rate in the fourth quarter, the Commerce Department said Friday. That is the highest pace of growth since 2003, and it constitutes strong proof that the recession reached its end earlier in 2009. It was also a surprisingly positive result, well above the 4.6 percent rate of GDP growth forecasters had expected.

Here's the link. Notice I'm not telling you to "go to" anything.

You won't see this on FOX, but I do wonder how they will misconstrue this one.

create,

Like you, my portfolio,( a very small one), has increased very well this last reporting period. But I'm not celebrating yet.

If the GDP rose this year, (2009), look at the drop last year, (2008) on your link. We are still below the losses of last year, only one way to go. It should also be remembered that the report is only the 2nd estimate out of three reports with the final one to come.

I don't want to be a constant complainer, that you mentioned but I don't see the economy improving much this year due to employment figures that are grossly under reported, credit tightening for businesses, the fed deficit and the fact that our public officials cannot or will not stop spending money they don't have.
Oh, if we had just invested in a few gold bars five years ago?

On another thread, you and biscuit have taken to task a poster as being hard, careless and heartless regarding children in need, (regarding school lunches).

What do you think we all, (our government) are doing today with our reckless ways?
Are we not endangering all of our children's futures to live a life better than us? Are we mortgaging their future to pay for our lifestyles?

On CNN, by contrast, there was a 22-point disparity in the percentage of negative stories on Obama (39 percent) and McCain (61 percent). The disparity was even greater at MSNBC, according to Pew, where just 14 percent of Obama stories were negative, compared to a whopping 73 percent of McCain stories -- a spread of 59 points.

Steve, I agree with Biscuit. What you are addressing with regard to our children's future doesn't even begin to compare to embarassing a child day after day after day by feeding him a peanut butter or cheese sandwich for lunch while his classmates get a full, hot lunch.

It is heartless and despicable to treat a child that way by punishing him just because his mother and father cannot afford to buy a lunch ticket. That's segregation. Exclusion! That is shameful.

That sort of treatment will guarantee one thing -- those children will get bullied by classmates and before long will hate school, perhaps even drop out.
