Storytime

Winter Storytimes are being held at the Emporia Public Library with the theme this coming week of “All Tucked In” for the Pat-A-Cake Club for infants to 18 months at 9:15 a.m. Thursdays and Mother Goose Time for toddlers to 36 months, 9:45 a.m. Mondays and Thursdays; “Happy Birthday Kansas” for preschool storytime for children three to five years old at 10:30 a.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays; and “Snuggle Up” for Family Night (all families welcome) at 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday night.

Reading month

Children’s Services at the Emporia Public Library is having a Family Reading Month in February, with the program designed to encourage entire families to read together. This year’s theme is “Saddle Up and Read, Bookaroo!” Registration for the program begins at a Kick-off party at 3 p.m. Jan. 31. There will be games, crafts and snacks for the occasion. The rest of February is spent reading together as a family and earning coupons from local businesses. A grand finale party will be held at 3 p.m. Feb. 28, again with games, crafts and snacks. There will be a special treat of stories around a campfire. Prizes will be awarded to the families who have read the most minutes at the end of the month. Photo exhibit

“Faces from the Land: Twenty Years of Powwow Tradition,” an exhibition of photographs produced by photographers Ben and Linda Marra continues through March 22 at the Norman R. Eppink gallery in King Hall on the ESU campus. This exhibition “chronicles visually and through accompanying text, the life choices of and traditional garb worn by Native Americans attending and dancing at powwow events occurring around the country today,” stated the news release. The artist reception will be from 5 to 7 p.m. March 2 in the BruderTheater Lobby. On March 3 at 3 p.m., Ben and Linda Marra will present an Art Forum Lecture in Science Hall No. 72 on the ESU campus.

Joyce Thierer, ESU assistant professor, will present two performances, also open to the public, that present “a vivid account of the experiences of Native Americans living during the 1800s,” stated the news release.

The first performance will be at 3 p.m. Feb. 10 in Science Hall No. 72. “Lewis and Clark’s and the Corps of Discovery, but whose discovery was it.”

The second presentation will be a live performance by Thierer from 7 to 9 p.m. March 2 in Bruder Theater, “The Land Cannot Be Sold.”

Concert

The “co-dependents” trio will perform classic rock, ’60s and ’70s pop and Americana country tunes Jan. 29 at the Nowhere Bar in Americus. On Feb. 5, co-dependents’ bassist, Bill Ihling (guitar and vocals), will perform an “acoustic Americana” solo show at the Nowhere Bar in Americus.

The trio will perform Feb. 6 and March 13 at Natasha’s in Emporia and Feb. 26 at the Nowhere Bar. All shows begin at 9 p.m.

ESU music

The Emporia State University Department of Music spring 2010 schedule begins with a Piano Concert featuring students of Martin Cuellar at 3 p.m. Sunday on Heath Recital Holl at Beach Music Hall on the ESU campus. There will be an Honors Concert at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 2 in Heath Recital Hall on Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Heath Recital Hall, Anne Madison, pianist, will perform. General admission, $5; students and seniors, $4. For more information, call 341-5246.

Workshop

The Community Arts Council of Council Grove will be the host for a two-day “Beginning Oil Painting” workshop taught by professional artist Tricia Spencer of Lexington, Ky., beginning Feb. 6 and 7 at the Rendezvous in Council Grove. The workshop is open to high school and adult artists. According to the news release, Spencer began working as a sterling silver jewelry designer living and working in Mexico. Her designs have been represented in the Art Institute of Chicago catalog, the Hirshhorn Museum at the Smithsonian institutions and many of the major art museums across the United States.
