Madison coach Alan Brown had what he called “a little visit” with his team at halftime concerning its defensive effort. That talk and a defensive change helped Madison snap a three-game losing streak with a 58-52 win at Marais des Cygnes Valley on Tuesday.
MdCV post Michael Zabel scored 17 of his 24 points in the first half, and Brown challenged his team to slow down the big man.
At the six-minute mark of the third quarter, the Bulldogs went to a box-and-one on Zabel. Zabel, who is 6-foot-5, was held to just three points the rest of the way by Reece Childers, who gave up three inches to Zabel. The game was tied at half, but the box-and-one helped Madison take a 46-37 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Along with Childers, who scored 10 points for Madison, Zach Nowell came up big with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Henry Ott led the Bulldogs with 15 points.
Madison won for the first time since Dec. 11.
“It was good to snap the losing streak, and I think it was something that our young men as well as the coaching staff needed,” Brown said. “It was a good win for us and hopefully that will carry over as we try to improve each game.”

Council Grove boys 61, Northern Heights 53
Northern Heights struggled at the free throw line, making just 9 of 25, and that was one of the big differences on Tuesday against Council Grove.
Council Grove was not great at the line but did make 15 of 27.
Casey Atchison led Heights with 18 points and eight rebounds. Teeino Tabares scored 12 points, had eight rebounds and four assists, but he was just 1 of 9 at the free throw line. Nathan Campbell added 10 points.
“This was a very intense, hard fought game by both teams,” NHHS coach Lanny Massey said. “The difference in the game was the free throw line. They made more free throws than we did. We can’t win close games shooting 36 percent from the line.
“We also let them beat us up on the glass. We played well enough to win in the other facets of the game, but we got beat in two phases and that is all it took. I was very proud of our effort and the way we played defense.”
