Hell of a way to cut this story, Gwen. When do y'all plan to stop this lame attempt and driving up online subscriptions?

The performance based budget committee will make a recommendation to the board of education in febuary to decide if Emporia should close a grade school but no specific school has been named. More detailed information can be found at http://www.usd253.org/home/news/distr...

barefoot, I'm w/ bob on this one - it seems pretty lame way to drive sales. My bet is this - Walnut is in a perfect location and doesn't have a seat left to fill. Plus, I've heard Ben Coltrane is one of the best the district has...

I doubt Walnut is closing. I don't doubt some other elementary will, just not Walnut.

I guess I'll have to go to the library to find out...

You posters are a prime example of "I want to bitch, but I will only do it if it doesn't cost me anything".
Buy a subscription you tightwads.
If I ran this PRIVATE business website I wouldn't let you post without a subscription.

Blue_Dog,
We aint' tightwads, we're just economical. News, as barefootin's post shows, can always be found somewhere for free. Advertising is where they need to make money, NOT paid subscriptions. This is especially true for online news. If the Gazette requires you to pay to read and/or post here, less people will visit. Less visitors means less companies will be interested in advertising. Less advertising means less dollars for the Gazette. Create a better site with more interactive features and you'll get more visitors and a higher exposure for potential advertisers. Just my opinion, o’course so please don’t call me any more names if you disagree.

From what I heard, a study was done and it was recommended that 2 schools be closed. I believe one was Walnut for several reasons. The reasons I remember are the energy use/effeciency and parking issues. It sounds like the school board is not going to follow the recommendations, or lets hope not.

We moved to this area of town and one, if the not the main reason was so our children could attend Walnut.

Walnut is a school that has been known for years to be one of the best in town and has some of the best parent support/participation in town. A friend of mine told me that her relative works at Lowther and said that she could tell the kids that went to Walnut becuase there was something special about them.

BLUE_DOG, when I was in school they always talked about this ol' paper that a bunch of TIGHTWADS, that floated across an ocean and started a country had signed that gave people RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS. Maybe if your lucky they will write an article about it in YOUR PAID paper and you can also have the knowledge Im not going to give on this PRIVATE site!!

I don't know why they even bother to have a website. I know of no other paper anywhere that is so afraid they might miss a buck. I won't pay to buy their rag but they have advertisers that are their main source of revenue anyway. But printing a headline and then having nothing but a statement basically to go buy a paper if you want to read it is tacky. I think they should just eliminate the website. It's useless.

Heres a story of Emporia schools improving over the last year. This article dont mention it, but I thought usd 253 had also changed curriculums for this year. The teaching materials used are very important.

Hottopics- I think South Coffey County just started a 4 day week- adding 30 minutes to each of the 4 days. Read on KVOE news website.

No matter what school is closed, (if any), do you think the board will sell it? No! They will keep it and fill it up with new programs and new personel. Savings? I think not.

Quack - You are correct in that Southern Coffey County just recently as of this week switched to a 4 day school week. This caused a lot of controversy between the locals of Gridley and LeRoy. Some were for it because Wolf Creek has a 4 day work week, so this would go hand in hand. But the opposing side didnt see that adding only 30 min a day could give the students the same amount of education they had before. There was a good article in the Coffey County Republican from Burlington about a month ago stating more facts. However, this switch to a 4 day school week was more of a expirement this semester, to try to see how much it actually saved the district. The borad stated that this may or may not change in the upcoming semesters after this one. I guess time will tell if this is a good move.

I'm a broken record on this, but - I really don't have a problem with needing a subscription to see entire articles (although I think this article was "nipped" way too short).... but I definitely would like to see the Gazette provide complete obituaries on line.... many people that have left the area still have concerns & sometimes you can't necessarily identify a person's relatives from what is printed. Please print entire obituaries on-line w/o a subscription - Thank you.
