Issues raised at a public-comment session on Monday prompted the Emporia board of education to defer making a decision on what cuts will be made to salvage at least $1.4 milion from the district's budget. The cuts were made necessary after the Kansas legislature and governor dropped state aid per-pupil to $4,012 each.
The board voted unanimously to postpone the decision during its regular meeting Wednesday evening in the Mary Herbert Education Center.
Among other actions, the board accepted a retirement notification from Emporia High School Associate Principal Cruz Jasso and the resignation of Walnut Principal Ben Coltrane.
For more details from the board meeting, see Thursday's online or print Gazette.

After reading what KC is going through, it's sad we can't find a solution to this problem. KC is short $50 million and is considering closing 31 schools (half of them) and laying off 25% of staff, including 285 teachers. And our school district is worried about taking a pay cut and saving music class for 4th and 5ht graders.
