Students looking for money to pay for college can try for one of four $500 scholarships at College Goal Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Emporia High School.
Students who will be college freshmen this fall and their parents should plan to spend 45 minutes to an hour at College Goal Sunday, and they will get help from a financial aid professional to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Before the event, students and parents should register for a PIN, which is required for the electronic filing of the FAFSA, at www.pin.ed.gov. Families should bring their 2009 income tax returns and/or W-2 forms, or their 2009 year-end pay stubs and 2008 tax returns. Those who have not completed their 2009 income tax forms can learn valuable information to help them finish filling out the FAFSA at home.
In Kansas, College Goal Sunday is a nonprofit event coordinated by the Kansas Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and other volunteers. This annual event is sponsored by USA Funds and Lumina Foundation for Education.
