City waives parking for events

Thursday, February 18, 2010

City commissioners had a light meeting agenda Wednesday night, approving only three related resolutions in one motion.

The resolutions all involve suspending timed parking during events coming up at the Civic Auditorium.

Those events are:

• the 1A Sub-State basketball tournament, which will run from Thursday, March 4 through Saturday, March 6.

• the 6A State basketball tournament, running from Wednesday, March 10 through Saturday, March 13.

• The annual EVCO Trade Show on Wednesday, March 24.

The resolutions will affect the 400 to the 700 blocks from Market Street to Merchant Street. During the basketball tournaments, timed parking will be waived starting at 11 a.m. each day. For the trade show, the waiver will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

They should waive the timed parking but make all the sports fanatics buy a temporary parking pass that they can hang on their rear view mirror that way the city can still get the money they so desperately need.

Hopefully people coming to Emporia for those events will stay in our local hotels, fill up their cars at our gas stations, eat at our local restaurants, and shop before they leave town. I would say that the business brought to town outweighs the minimal parking fees that would have been collected.

Sorry,

With the amount of people attending these events and visiting Emporia, the LAST thing we need to do is sour them with a parking ticket.

As far as I am concerned all parking meters and timed limits should be removed. But if the city did that all of us Fat Greedy and Lazy business owners and downtown workers would hog all the good spots, leaving none for customers.

Give the visitors, (and their dollars), to Emporia a break once or twice a year------NO BIGGIE!

Heck,

We should throw the visitors a parade for coming to town for these events.

WAIT!

We are on the 13th. St Patricks day parade, downtown Emporia 1:00 p.m.

Welcome to Emporia!
