Narcissistic

Thursday, February 11, 2010

I recently read James Bordonaro’s scathing review of Matthew Spalding’s lecture at the Granada Theatre. In short, Mr. Bordonaro’s article was little more than an attempt to justify his own political leanings and to remove any embarrassment that was dealt to him by Mr. Spalding at the lecture.

The problem that I see with Mr. Bordonaro’s letter is he appears too self-absorbed to understand that there are two sides to this story and only wants his side portrayed publicly. It is okay to philosophically disagree with someone regarding politics, which happens to be the beauty of our political system; however, to denigrate a man (Matthew Spalding) for speaking his particular brand of politics through a fallacious letter to The Gazette is incomprehensible and childish, especially when that man (Spalding) has no recourse to correct the errors. So I will attempt to stand up for Mr. Spalding, knowing full well that I could not do him or his argument justice.

I happen to agree with Mr. Spalding’s argument, political standing, and his insistences that Mr. Bordonaro is deeply mistaken regarding his understanding of Progressivism. Progressivism is fundamentally foreign to the ideology America was founded on. Mr. Bordonaro’s short laundry list of, what he calls, “Progressive” accomplishments was actually accomplished by both Democrats and Republicans; nevertheless, it does not matter who adopts Progressivism it is the same thing — a political mutation of American ideology. One part Mr. Bordonaro forgot to mention, which amazes me, about Teddy Roosevelt is the fact the development of the Progressive Party only came after Roosevelt lost the Republican Presidential nomination to William Taft leading to the election of Woodrow Wilson (Progressive) in 1912.

Mr. Spalding spoke against the current health care bill that would require Americans to have some form of health insurance which is unquestionably an intrusion into personal liberty because it would require all Americans to have insurance even if he or she does not want to. More than anything, Mr. Spalding was exploring the ideology of limited government, which he believes has been missing from our government for some time. Mr. Spalding is a constitutionalist in the strictest sense of the word. Mr. Spalding posits the functions and limits of our government are revealed in the United States Constitution and Declaration of Independence, not a foreign ideology (Progressivism) that stems from a European based style of socialism.

Mr. Bordonaro’s barrage against the Heritage Foundation as lackeys of corporate America is a misguided effort to justify his own brand of politics; similar charges can be made against the Center for American Progress for creating and disseminating liberal (Progressive) ideology; again two sides to each argument. What Mr. Bordonaro sees as a threat to American liberties (or his understanding of American liberties), others may see as patriotism or civic duty; again depending on political perspective. For example, Mr. Bordonaro rambles about James O’Keefe’s undercover exposure of A.C.O.R.N.’s activities. Where Mr. Bordonaro sees a problem with O’Keefe uncovering A.C.O.R.N. employees explaining how to wiggle around federal law to obtain funds to buy a house which could be used as a brothel; I see O’Keefe as someone who did his civic duty in ensuring that taxpayer money was not misappropriated. And yes, James O’Keefe and his cohorts were recently arrested (Mr. Bordonaro got something right) on charges of attempting to bug Democrat Mary Landreau’s office, which is undeniably a serious situation, but to compare it to WatergateÅ|get serious. Both acts by O’Keefe and his affiliates were organized and executed by them, not the Republican Party or any other Conservative network.

Mr. Bordonaro’s closing sentence claims Emporians would never be taken by a “charlatan like Matthew Spalding.” However, I remember hearing the crowd burst into applause when Mr. Spalding respectfully answered Mr. Bordonaro’s question. That same respect was not shown to Mr. Spalding in Mr. Bordonaro’s letter or during the lecture when “YOU LIE” was blurted in the theatre by the latter.

For someone who ran for political office, Mr. Bordonaro should have a better comprehension of his constituency. Hopefully, Emporians will take the time to read both Mr. Bordonaro’s article and the one presented here. After that I believe it is necessary, as would Mr. Spalding (and hopefully Mr. Bordonaro), to truly understand the original intent of the Constitution (and America) and the foreign origins of Progressivism. After that all Emporians need to make an educated decision on which is the best way forward for our community and our nation. By all means disagree with one another, disagree with me, but at least have the conversation about how and why America was founded and on what ideological base this country has grown to become the greatest in the world. And to you Mr. Bordonaro — modus Vivendi.

koalemos (anonymous) says...

There is deceit in the heart of those who sow evil where to those who give council of peace there is joy. What happens emotionally when people try to make peace and don't?
Controversy is a response to an event that has already occurred. The event has occurred and people are distraught, they don't like how it's being handled so they have a conflicting view of how it should be handled. There are people who want to plant controversy. Who are these people? They are the ones who will cause friends to judge one another. Those people are called plowers of inequity. They are people who want to dig and dig and dig and look at other people with a microscope. To judge the and cause others to judge them because they like the result. Whats the result? The result that they like is controversy, it makes them feel alive, it gives them a feeling of superiority by being on the side of the angles. But the cause is not the controversy, the result is the controversy. There is always deceit in their heart. Part of the head set of a person who loves controversy is deceit because if they are not deceitful they cannot stir up a controversy and I'll tell you why, because if they had no deceit people would see through them...they would say the reason you are doing this or that is because of the hatred you have towards this person, it's not about ideology it's all personal. So what they have to do is to be deceitful to begin with to create a climate in which it's clearly or at least clear to the observer that it it's purely ideological it's purely in response to controversy, and it has nothing to do with personalities when it has everything to do with personalities. So that person will do everything deceitfully in order to create an atmosphere of microscopic judgment. To create an atmosphere where each person is scrutinizing the behavior of the other. Controversy is not the byproduct of that persons act it's the goal of that persons act. So the question is how did this person get this way? What attracts this person to the controversy? The divisions that will occur between the people as a consequence of the deceit is like a plow that turns the soil to prepare it for planting. Their goal is division and divisive people as I have described are evil.

You nailed it, Mr.CMonkeeDo. After reading that passage, I too find it makes no sense. I would guess that all Americans want some form of health insurance. And if they believe it is an intrusion to their personal liberty and don't want any insurance, then what?

Do the rest of us pay for your health care when you get a catastrophic illness and can't pay the hospital bill? Do we just have constant keg parties and taco feeds to gather up the bucks to pay your bills? Or do you just take out bankruptcy and stick it to the medical establishment thereby raising the costs for the rest of us?

This idea of yours smacks of anarchy. You don't want any government, but you do want certain parts of it when your ship is sinking.

You don't want any government, yet you will expect the rest of us to go to your fund-raising keg parties and taco feeds so we can help you pay your medical bills. Think about it like this...

you as an individual, is expecting the group to help you out.

Well, hell, dude. That's socialism!!! That's the government bailing your sorry a$$ out just because you refused to pay a monthly premium.

seriouslyfolks (anonymous) says...

I know a guy who makes just enough to not qualify for any type of government assistance and cannot afford health insurance he can't afford rent or food either at least not for himself. Why? Because most of his pay check goes to his exwife and his 4 kids(which is where his money should go maybe not quite so much but whatever). So yes there are people who do not want to be forced to pay for insurance. Right now the best health care for him is being able to buy food because if you stop eating ................ well you get the opposite of healthy. I know this is a rare case but cases like this are out there. My point is it's presumptuous to assume that there is no one that doesn't want insurance.

February 12, 2010 at 8:53 a.m. ( | suggest removal )

biscuitboy (anonymous) says...

Maybe seriouslyfolks...but then to use that rare case as an excuse to not provide health care to the tens of thousands that do want but can't afford it is also a bit presumptuous. MrC and create have it right in my opinion.

I never said to use it as an excuse. It needs to be considered. It seems to me that with hrc they think they have it all figured out and know exactly how much it will cost and I just don't believe that. I think they are assuming it is going to run perfectly and there won't be fraud and it will be all rainbows and unicorns. That has never been the case. There is always fraud and things always end up costing a lot more than expected when it comes to government. They need to listen and consider all questions and objections that are raised if this is to be done correctly. It's assumed that any questions or objections that are raised are just partisan grumbling so they are just dismissed. I just want everything to be considered so it can be done as well as possible. I know I sound like a raving foamy mouthed tea party attendee and I apologize for offending anyone but it just makes sense to me to proceed with caution and do it right.

For them I would say fine...no health care reform for you. But you pay for all medical treatment up front.....no bankruptcies...no bailouts...no mercy.

I just want to point out that the article was more of a summation of Spalding's lecture and political viewpoint. I feel that the idea that was pulled out of my article (healthcare) was not the intention of the piece. I am not opposed to healthcare reform, just the one that is being presented or rejected now. Several of you have made very valid points regarding the healthcare situation. However, what I was trying to show is how Spalding (and other Conservatives-including myself) do not believe in mandating someone to have healthcare. I did not have it for 6 years and I am glad I saved money by not paying the premiums-yes I am lucky nothing happened. The real concern is the fact the government would mandate their citizenry to have insurance because then where does it stop. Spalding's and my own view of the Constitution shows that the government does not and should not have the authority to do so. Some on here have claimed that anarchy stems from lack of government; however, that is not what I want or suggest. James Madison wrote in Federalist 51- If all men were angels, no government would be necessary. We know that not to be true. Perhaps an evening with the Federalist Papers and even the Anti-Federalist Papers would help everyone better understand original intent and limitations of government-our government!

It's funny that you mention O.J. Simpson. I was not in the U.S. during the arrest and trial and all that so I didn't get the constant media bombardment that folks in the states did but I did notice one thing. Some people seemed to think that if they proved that the police were corrupt and they were framing the Juice that would prove his innocence. I heard somebody ask if it could be possible that they are trying to frame him AND he is guilty? It's possible that he is guilty and the cops miss handled things. One does not exclude the other. It seems to me that is what is going on here. Just because O'Keefe may have committed a crime doesn't mean that A.C.O.R.N. isn't also corrupt. If O'Keefe is busted for something, he'll have to answer for that. Shouldn't the same thing happen to A.C.O.R.N. if their corruption is exposed?

What an appropriate picture there, koalemos! Good find!

irish,
What term do you want me to use instead of taco feeds? That wasn't being racist at all. It so happens that taco feeds are the most popular fare for fund raisers because everybody likes them and you can buy them by the dozen and take 'em home and fry 'em yourself. Good grief, man, should I also not have referred to beer just in case I insult some German and not give enough attention to Japanese beer or Mexican beer? For fund raisers, it makes more sense to serve domestic beer because it costs less to buy.

Maybe I should have said roast beef suppers instead. Would that have been more neutral to suit you? Did you know that fewer people will go to a roast beef supper as a fund raiser, but more will buy tacos. Get real, it's all about the money.

This must be pick on create day.

BTW irish, with a national health plan, health premiums will be more affordable for those wishing to take advantage ot it. For those who don't, they can continue with their regular plans. But one way or another, everyone needs health care insurance of some sort because I'm sick of paying for your healthcare bills, and I'm sick of seeing the medical establishment eat the charges because eventually they pass it down the pike to me.

Incidentally, for those of you who don't mind a lengthy article, there is a very good one available in the March issue of Esquire. This is an interview of the Minnesotta governor, Republican Tim Pawlenty who is expected to run for president in 2012. Pawlenty discusses the need for Republican party leadership and talks about bailouts, health care, whether Obama is a socialist, and where Republicans should go from here. It's 7 pages long, but you all can read it online if you like. I printed it off because I like to read lengthier copy in my hand -- it's a leftover from having been an English teacher you see.

With regard to polls, I found this today on Iglesias.thinkprogress.org, and I firmly agree with what the writer here has to say about them.

Polls register largish minorities of the population as saying all kinds of things. It’s very hard to know what to make of any of those polls as snapshots without some kind of context and duration over time. Do people even know what the “tea party” movement is? Do the people showing up to the tea parties? I’ve previously discussed my encounter with a tea partier who likes freedom so much that she waves a flag endorsing chattel slavery. For the tea party to have a chance of improving its position it appears it will have to somehow break the angry white conservative image it now holds. So far it has shown little willingness to do that. In fact its keynote speakers at its convention seemed more designed to re-enforce that very view of itself.

It is facing some what of a quandary. To have any real chance of becoming anything more than a self-limiting movement it must broaden the tent, which then risk alienating the angry white conservative base it is founded on.

You know what? That sounds a lot like the conservative wing of the republican party from whence it came. But I have seen nothing yet to support reddog's claim that it is truly representative of public opinion other than it's dissatisfaction with government. Hell...even a Daily Koss survey shows only about a thirty nine per cent satisfaction with government at present....because it is not moving enough to the left.

I'm dissatisfied with government at present because it's priorities are all screwed up and would respond that way to a survey if asked......but that doesn't mean that dissatisfaction would translate to support for the tea party...and especially for the tea party I see today.

Great comment, biscuit. I myself would respond in the same way because it seems that many priorities of our present government have been mixed up. And that means on both sides of the aisle, not just one.

I did read this morning, however, that we are capturing fewer terrorist prisoners. I'm guessing that makes for fewer prisoner controversies. The first two paragraphs of this article in the Wall Street Journal make my day.

"When a window of opportunity opened to strike the leader of al-Qaeda in East Africa last September, U.S. Special Operations forces prepared several options. They could obliterate his vehicle with an airstrike as he drove through southern Somalia. Or they could fire from helicopters that could land at the scene to confirm the kill. Or they could try to take him alive.

The White House authorized the second option. On the morning of Sept. 14, helicopters flying from a U.S. ship off the Somali coast blew up a car carrying Saleh Ali Nabhan. While several hovered overhead, one set down long enough for troops to scoop up enough of the remains for DNA verification. Moments later, the helicopters were headed back to the ship."

The GOP and TP complained so bitterly about the Christmas Bomber and his interrogation strategies, yet we never heard anything about this quick take down of the East Africa leader of al Qaeda, bloody as it was.

Quick, bloody, take no prisoners! Can't say I don't agree. War is hell. But the Obama White House was not widely recognized for this little adventure was it? Nobody said, Good Job Mr. President. Good decision to take out this bastard and get the evidence for the kill at the same time. That part was smart, lest opposition say it was just a war story to prop up the headlines. Hell no, never give him a break! Wouldn't want to revive any patriotic verve in the general populace at a time like this when it's easier to whip 'em into a frenzy over the bad economy that took many, many years to develop.

Sometimes anger is the only thing that will finally motivate people off their lazy behinds to actually get things done. I don't know about anyone else.......... but I saw an awful lot of anger during the last 4 years of Bush. No less anger than I'm seeing in the tea party (well, if you looked at all the assassination posters, I would say actually more, but that all apparently depends on which news you watch chooses to cover). They managed to channel that anger quite effectively in the 2008 elections. Remains to be seen if the tea party can do the same.

I also saw some discussions on the fact that we are capturing fewer terrorists. The argument was that we are also gleaning less intelligence because instead of capturing them alive and finding out what they know we are just killing them. Well, I see fair arguments both ways on that. Personally I'd like to capture them alive, gleam all they know, and then turn them loose and let them run naked through a minefield to their demise but then again that's just one more reason why I'm not in charge ;-)
