St. Patrick committee readies for auction

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

The Brown Bag Concert Series and Lord’s Lambs Preschool will be the beneficiaries of this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Committee fundraisers, according to an announcement from committee member Bev Durham.

The concert series — sponsored by Emporia Public library, the Emporia Arts Council, Emporia Main Street and the Lyon County Historical Society — holds weekly lunch-time entertainment programs outside the library. The St. Patrick’s funds will help pay for those performers for this season.

Money raised for the Lord’s Lambs Preschool at Faith Lutheran Church will help pay for upgrades to playground equipment and make a safer passage for children from their building to the play area, Durham said.

The committee has organized a local St. Patrick’s Day Parade for the past 14 years and, through related activities, has raised more than $111,000, primarily to benefit children in this area.

The 14th annual St. Patrick’s Benefit Auction will be held beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26, at Bruff’s Bar and Grill.

The group is accepting donations for the auction, which can be made by calling Daryl Polzin at 343-7031. The auction is open to the public.

On March 13, the committee will hold its 15th annual St. Patrick’s Parade beginning at 1 p.m. in downtown Emporia. Bagpipers again will be brought in for the parade and festivities, and parade entries now are being accepted.

“Families, organizations, businesses and individuals are all encouraged to join in the fun and participate,” Durham said in a news release.

Information and parade entries may be had by calling Polzin at the number listed above. Prizes will be given in four categories: organization, business, family and committee’s choice. There is no entry fee.

Tickets also will be available for a drawing for a 50-inch flat-screen television. Donations for tickets are suggested at $1 each.

14 years! Doesn't seem possible. Bravo to all the committee members, past and present for doing such a good thing for Emporia--thank you. $111,000 is nothing to sneeze at. I wish you continued success--and don't forget to have fun while you're doing it!
