For the second straight day, Emporia State split a doubleheader against a Colorado opponent.
Emporia State finished the RMAC/MIAA challenge on Saturday with another split against another Colorado opponent.
After splitting its first series against Colorado Mines, the Hornets once again lost a doubleheader opener to Regis, 10-8, and bounced back with an 8-4 win in Game 2.
Emporia State jumped out early in the first game, scoring two runs on doubles by Linda Ketter and Miranda Campbell. The Rangers rebounded with three of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
The Hornets added two runs in the second as Abby Hughes came through with a two-run single, but once again Regis answered, scoring five runs in the second to take the lead for good.
Hughes and Campbell each finished with two RBIs and Hughes joined Amanda Self in going 2-for-4 in the game. Lauren Sharp earned the loss in her first career start.
In Game 2, Emporia State pushed across an early run in the first inning on a Miranda Campbell single. Regis responded with a run in the second inning before ESU put up a four-run inning on an Angela Mahan home run and three doubles in the third to take the lead.
Campbell went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Self also went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Ketter went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Karly Schmelzer earned the victory in her first career start, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing only one earned run on five hits.
ESU is now 2-2 on the season and will travel on Friday to play at Abilene Christian’s two-day tournament.
