Charlatan Spalding

Friday, February 5, 2010

Matthew Spalding of the Heritage Foundation appeared (recently) at the Granada Theater as part of the ESU “Lectures on Liberty” series and asserted that the Progressive Movement has been undermining the foundations of American democracy in favor of Western European style socialism since its inception at the beginning of 19th Century.

In my opinion, it is Mr. Spalding and his Neo-Conservative, Tea Party, fringe ilk which are the more serious threat to our cherished freedoms. While raving against the current health care bill as an assault on personal liberty, he failed to mention that traditional popular policies such as Medicare and Social Security are as much a product of Progressivism as the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s or the trust busting of Teddy Roosevelt, a Republican president who later founded the Progressive Party with the assistance of William Allen White, at the beginning of the last century.

The Heritage Foundation is little more than an intellectually dishonest front for corporate interests and their Neo-Con shills which seeks to mislead the public with fearmongering and demagoguery. You want proof? Less than six months ago, the Heritage Foundation heralded as “young and brave journalists” the activists who engaged in secret videotaping of employees of the liberal, non-profit community organizing group, A.C.O.R.N., while disguised as a prostitute and her pimp supposedly seeking assistance in obtaining federal grants for their “small business.” The activists became darlings of the neo-conservatives on talk radio and in Congress so much so that 31 House Republicans cosponsored a resolution in their honor and A.C.O.R.N. was threatened with the loss of all federal funding.

Today brings news that the leader of the group along with three others was arrested on federal felony charges of attempting to bug the New Orleans’ office of Democratic Senator, Mary Landreau. If you think this sounds a lot like the original Watergate conspiracy, one of the greatest threats to American democracy in our lifetimes, you’re not alone. Emporians know better than to be taken in by a charlatan like Matthew Spalding.

I've just reviewed the comments to my letter to the editor and am frankly mystified as to what most posts have to do with my original premise. I suppose that's what is most troubling these days-we can't seem to have a serious debate about issues using the new electronic medium of the internet without it degenerating into name calling and nonsensical tangents. For example, MadMack said I should "put down that m.m. doobie! You are as far out there as red[dog]. Lauding a pyramid scheme aka a Ponzi scheme."

What does that even mean! Does the writer agree or disagree with my position on the Heritage Foundation, Progressivism, William Allen White or any other issue I raised in my letter and does he or she have facts to back it up? That's all I'm really interested in knowing and responding to.

Finally, thank you to the people who appreciated my letter for your support.

I heard on the radio that Hill's Appliance Center is closing. And you will see some more as many people in business are being taxed far beyond what they can afford and with new tax laws that discourage the family business, why fight it? I think there is an agenda to destroy the middle class and self employed people. The economic impact of this closing is more than I want to talk about. The closing of any business and the subsequent loss of jobs is almost never a good thing...and that is certainly as true of Hill's Appliance as any place. But in the real world where most of us live, I fail to see where the closing of this store is any different, or more terrible, than the closing of any other. And it certainly will have less economic impact than the closing of Modine and Tyson slaughter side and Diddie's to name but a few. All of which happened some time ago and to one degree or another led to the closing of this store.

None of those closing were attributable to these yet to be enacted tax laws you are trying to blame it on. In fact, the owner of the store told KVOE the primary reasons for the closing was;
......A...the economic downturn which began before this administration took office.
......B...the abundance of competition from the discount stores and big box stores in the trade area.
Neither of these reasons can be laid on this administration either.

I am sorry to see Hill's close...I know people that work there and where I work we did business with them. It's closing will add to the cumulative effect of all the closings that are wrecking the economy in this town. But your attempt to blame it all on recent political events is hogwash, and tells me you better go back and take some of those econ courses over again.

I went to one of the local tea parties, and was not impressed. For people who say they are upset about government overspending, they sure talked a lot about why God wasn't in schools anymore. I didn't mention that he wasn't there before 1953. I figured it would fall on deaf ears.

I agree with goodoleboy. You didn't hear the rants of reddog when the real estate bubble was lining his pockets. Those bankers aren't the only ones who made out, but real estate agents kept that bubble aloft as well.

With regard to lower taxes, in a nutshell, Republicans want to lower the deficit. Democrats want to release money for loans to small businesses. Which of those makes more sense to employ more people so that more of our local businesses don't close?

Easy money loans to people who couldn't afford the houses they were buying is a big part of what got us into this mess. Easy money loans to people for small businesses could have the same effect. create,
from your above:

"but we can't help it when immature half-wits insist on displaying their ignorance because they don't really understand issues."
Whoa
What's the issue?

James wrote stating his opinion about the Heritage Foundation.
His opinion is shared by many, but just as many may not share it.
A recurring theme in all these threads is who's fault it is.
Who was in power when this or that happened?
What party is at fault?
Blame it on wall street, the bankers, the greedy businessman, corrupt politicians, your next door neighbor.
Just blame someone else.
Cut taxes, but not mine.
Raise taxes, but not mine.
Cut services, but not mine.
Are we not all to blame for this mess?
People who don't vote or don't take the time to study the candidates stand on issues and just vote a straight ticket?

While I agree with James Bordonaro and his letter, he didn't ask for or give a solution to the problems he wrote about.

For what it is worth, I have a solution to all of our problems here in Emporia, Kansas, United State of America.
2 words:
TERM LIMITS.

February 9, 2010 at 9:54 a.m. ( | suggest removal )

create (anonymous) says...

There is indeed an issue. And you're right, Steve; Bordonaro did not ask for a solution. Point taken. Nonetheless, it's all the barrage of remarks that rob the thread of what could be meaningful discussion.

Yes, we are all to blame, me included. I should have paid more taxes. So should you. Fewer write-offs? I should have shopped more. Or should I have saved more so the banks would have more money to lend? But then again, with large scale unemployment, would those loans go belly up? See? you can't get away from it, can you?

Term limits? How would that help? Then we'd be led by inexperience wouldn't we?

Maybe you're right. Can't be worse than what we have now. But there you go, Steve, you yourself are playing the blame game -- on old politicians.

Here's my solution: Get rid of all lobbyists both in Washington DC and in all states too.

With regard to Scott Brown, yes, he did upset the Kennedy machine in Massachussets. However, it was the independents who elected him and he did say once in Washington that he plans to look carefully at the issues and NOT vote purely partisan. I hope he means it.

It's going on in both parties and has for a long time now. C'mon kiddo, surely you've been paying attention to these blogs long enough to see that I do go after both sides. In fact, not long ago I mentioned that I am a registered Democrat, but for only one reason, and that is so that I can vote in the primaries. It's a strategy.

I am neiither far right nor far left. Even open_eyes can attest to that.

Here's another example. I've always supported Moran because of all the good things he has done for the Veteran's Admin. But recently, when I asked about his voting record on health care, I got no reply. In the past, when I supported his votes on the VA, I always got a reply. I have neither time nor vote for that kind of politician.

And yes, as has been obvious, I am an Obama supporter. I supported his campaign with a large monetary donation too because I believe in what he is trying to do and am patient enough to give him the time he needs to do it. Too many wanted instant turnarounds. They're too accustomed to everything else in their lives being instant.

That claim about the passage of time and blame leads me to agree with goodoleboy and the question he just asked above.

It appears to be quite okay to be partisan on the right as long as you are not partisan on the left

It appears to be fine to glorify the teabaggers and Sarah...as long as you don't glorify Obama.

It appears to be quite okay to say what ever nasty thing enters your head in response to a post from the left.....but don't say anything the least bit unkind, or even challenge a thought to someone on the right.

Partisan? This whole stinking thing has always been partisan...the only thing that has changed is now a few people actually represent views other than the far right. And that's why the right has their panties all in a bunch.

Why are the Democrats holding back on auditing the Federal Reserve. The Democrats are in control and if they are truely for the working class why do they not want to bring everything out into the light. WHAT ARE THEY TRYING TO HIDE?

I made some changes for you, auditing the fed is not a new trend. My question to you is why are ALWAYS attacking the left when the right has just as much to be accountable for?

Steve,
I've been thinking about your idea re: term limits. I said that it might work, but that we'd be led by inexperience. I changed my mind. We'd be led by worse, naivete.

The Washington machine is run by dynamos who are real savvy. Who are they? These are the heads of agencies, sub heads, people who know all the ins and outs, which buttons to push, who to nudge, who owes who a favor.

It seems to me that it is just as dangerous to have the old dogs around who are too familiar with the machine as there would be a bunch of pups who don't know anything at all about how it works.

It'sgettinglate.

Easy money loans to people who couldn't afford the houses they were buying is a big part of what got us into this mess. Easy money loans to people for small businesses could have the same effect. How many small businesses fail and how many loans will be defaulted on when they do. What do you think about that?

Since the people who busted out A.C.O.R.N. were breaking the law, do you think that makes A.C.O.R.N. innocent?

James,
"I suppose that's what is most troubling these days-we can't seem to have a serious debate about issues using the new electronic medium of the internet without it degenerating into name calling and nonsensical tangents."

What exactly would you call the title of your article? I'd say the name calling started when the first word of the title was written. Wouldn't you?

If you care to do some simple research, you will find out that Nancy Pelosi is holding the bill to audit the Fed. The elite that is running this country matter not what political party is in power for as you know or should know--they own both sides. Now is the best chance that we have ever had to discover the secrets of the money masters. Most elites come from the Left with their tax free foundations that implement their new world order ideas. I told you and I tells you and I tells you I told you. When you listen to both sides of the story to audit the fed, God revealed to me that there is more than just 2 sides of the story. What is now in the dark will be brought to light. I'm thinking good thoughts about our leaders that they will do the right thing. And my prayer tonight is that people will realize that God provides every bird a worm and He never throws it into the nest. Our congress has an 18% approval rating because there standing in the middle of the road and getting knocked down from both sides. It's easy for congressmen to make a buck but it takes guts to make a difference.

Reddog is essentially correct in chiding me for critizing the partisan tone and ad hominem attacks on the blogs (this blog in particular) while at the same time having called Mr. Spalding a charlatan. [a technical point-the Gazette labeled the editorial so I didn't start out from the first word] Let me rephrase then, I strongly disagree with Mr. Spalding's interpretation of history. Furthermore, I believe his interpretation and that of the majoriy of Heritage Foundation members is designed to advance a corporate agenda of lax regulation and minimal taxation which has been cited by some economists as a casual factor in major economic downturns and historical instability.

Mary Landreau got elected the first time by only 2,000 votes and the election was contested as buses were hauling people to the polls and paying them for voting and it was reported that some people voted several times. an investigation through out the star witness because he had a drug felony arrest. It took a 100 million dollars to buy her vote for health care and this makes me sick. Will Rogers said, "An honest politican is one that stays bought after you buy him."

Your a young man with a political future and I encourage you to help in efforts to audit the fed. I'm an old guy and I'm over the hill, but I don't mind that because when your over the hill, you start picking up speed and I don't mean that drug stuff.
