Concert
The “co-dependents” bassist, Bill Ihling (guitar and vocals), will perform an “acoustic Americana” solo show at the Nowhere Bar in Americus at 9 p.m. today.
The trio will perform Saturday and March 13 at Natasha’s in Emporia and Feb. 26 at the Nowhere Bar. All shows begin at 9 p.m.
ESU music
The Emporia State University Department of Music will have a memorial service for Jeffrey Hodapp at 2 p.m. Saturday in Albert Taylor Hall. At 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Heath Recital Hall, Anne Madison, pianist, will perform. Woodwind Day, Brass Day and Percussion Day will be from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday in Albert Taylor Hall. At 7:30 p.m. Feb. 12, a faculty recital will be given by Jeremy Starr, violin, accompanied by Martin Cuellar, piano, in Heath Recital Hall of Beach Music Hall. Valentine’s crafts
Children’s Services at the Emporia Public Library will have a Valentine Craft Week instead of storytime next week. From 9 to 11 a.m. Monday through Thursday, participants can make valentine crafts. Reading month
The February Reading month program’s theme is “Saddle Up and Read, Bookaroo!” There will be western games, crafts and snacks for the occasion. The month of February is spent reading together as a family and earning coupons from local businesses. A grand finale party will be held at 3 p.m. Feb. 28, again with games, crafts and snacks. There will be a special treat of stories around a campfire. Prizes will be awarded to the families who have read the most minutes at the end of the month. Quilt talk
The Lyon County Historical Society Tuesday Night at the Museum at 7 p.m. features Helen Ericson and her presentation, “If Quilts Could Talk. At 6:30 p.m. the annual meeting will be held, which will include a business meeting, a vote on proposed by-law changes and for new members of the LCHS board.
Art exhibit
The annual Valentine’s Day Invitational will be up through Feb. 14 at the Emporia Arts Council featuring work by various artists dealing with the theme of love. ESU art faculty are donating work and inviting other artists to contribute to the exhibition. Art works in the show will be for sale, with proceeds to benefit Art Department students through scholarships. The closing reception will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Feb. 14 at the EAC, 618 Mechanic St. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. ‘Tap Kids’
The Emporia Arts Council will present “Tap Kids” at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Granada Theatre. Tap Kids “tells the story of a group of high-school kids facing challenges as they prepare for the big school dance at the end of the day and for graduation at the end of the year. It features eight extra-ordinary rhythm tap dancers age 16-21,” stated the EAC entertainment schedule.
Photo exhibit
“Faces from the Land: Twenty Years of Powwow Tradition,” an exhibition of photographs produced by photographers Ben and Linda Marra continues through March 22 at the Norman R. Eppink gallery in King Hall on the ESU campus. This exhibition “chronicles visually and through accompanying text, the life choices of and traditional garb worn by Native Americans attending and dancing at powwow events occurring around the country today,” stated the news release. The artist reception will be from 5 to 7 p.m. March 2 in the BruderTheater Lobby. On March 3 at 3 p.m., Ben and Linda Marra will present an Art Forum Lecture in Science Hall Room. 72 on the ESU campus.
Joyce Thierer, ESU assistant professor, will present two performances, also open to the public, that present “a vivid account of the experiences of Native Americans living during the 1800s,” stated the news release.
The first performance will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Science Hall Room 72, “Lewis and Clark’s and the Corps of Discovery, but whose discovery was it.”
