Some clarification

Wednesday, February 3, 2010

In order to clarify some things I want to reply to Fred Ellis letter of Jan. 13, 2010.

The red, white and blue vans that have been used to take veterans to the Veterans Administration hospitals in Topeka, Leavenworth and Kansas City, Mo., are bought and paid for by the National Disabled American Veterans, in conjunction with Ford Motor Co, Disabled American Veterans is printed on the vans in big letters. The American Legion nor the Veterans of Foreign Wars have no part in this endeavor.

There is a black station wagon being used, at the present time and is identified that the Legion Riders of McPherson paid for and gave it to the Veterans Administration Hospital.

National Disabled Americans Veterans have been buying the red, white and blue vans for over 10 years. They buy the vans, over a hundred at a time, each year, and GIVE them to Veterans Administration Hospitals all over the United States. As you might guess, the miles count up pretty fast. After several hundred thousand miles they are replaced. Over 2,100 van have been donated since the program started.

The Veterans Administration hospital pays for the maintenance, tires, gas and turnpike fees.

I was privileged to be one of the organizers, coordinator and driver when the first vans were given to Topeka VA Hospital. I have, personally, driven Mr. Ellis to many of his appointments. Several years ago I had to retire as a driver and coordinator, because of my health. Bob Swafford has been the very capable coordinator since that time.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the volunteer drivers, I will not try to list names because I do not want to overlook anyone that has donated their time to do this worth while service, they know who they are.

I am a life member of the Disabled American Veterans , and past Department of Kansas Commander. I am also a life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Veterans of Foreign Wars and The American Legion.
