Purchase locally

In reference to the Lyon County commissioners article from Jan. 22 approving purchase of three new Impalas from Ed Bozarth, what happened to “Shop Emporia First”?
It seems to us the Lyon County commissioners should lead by example of “shopping Emporia first” as we have three reputable new car dealerships in Emporia who need and want our business. It would be nice to know just how much it really saved the county in buying out of town. What will happen to Emporia if we all shop in Topeka and other towns? And also, were any of the commissioners against this?

If we're trying to save the taxpayers some money then we need to make sure we tag the cars in Coffee county.

Want my business? Be competitive. I'd hardly call our car dealerships in town competitive.

Local dealers? Might buy another here if I didn't get treated so bad.I was supposed to get a set price because I worked for a major supplier to all the car manufacturers. I was told I "wasn't eligible for that".I'm going for price(read out of town)again, period. My father has gone elsewhere for decades. That's two cash customers gone....

Try these, emporian.
Local dealer, I looked at and then requested the asking price of a particular car. The sales woman then asked what I would give for it. Again I requested the asking price to which she responded "You tell me what you'll give, I'll run it by the manager and if he agrees, we have a deal" I offered her a dollar before I left. This group is still in business on W 50 Hwy.
Different dealer now out of business. I'm looking at a car and I can see the salesman watching me through the window. FINALLY, after several minutes, he wanders out and I asked the price of the car because it wasn't posted here either. He removed a paper from a pocket, made a huge production out of locating the price and [remember, he's been watching me look at this and only this car] eventually pronounced his deal. I told him I was surprised it was so high to which he responded "Hey, you don't like it, go somewhere else." I did. 50 miles up the Turnpike.

A number of years ago, I was asked by a new car dealer if he could roll back the millage on my used car trade in----I told him he was a crook and bought the same car out of town and one old time new car dealer of another brand went absolutly crazy.

That new car dealer is not around anymore, just in case you are wondering.

How many would be howling right now if the commission had taken the higher local bid? Our Mayor, ( a local dealership owner), said yesterday the commission did the right thing by taking the lowest bid.
I'm tickled to death the commission saved over nine thousand of our tax dollars.
"SHOP EMPORIA FIRST"
It's a old, forgetable and obnoxious jingle.
Change it!

A savings of $9,000 is substantial and certainly makes sense.
Here is the agenda for today's (Feb 4) county commission mtg:
http://www.lyoncounty.org/lyco_agenda...
Notice that in the minutes of the meeting for Jan 28, Chris Walker and Ashley Walker spoke to three of the commissioners regarding the Community Corrections auto purchase, Commissioners Walters and Briggs and Dan Slater, comptroller. Each only note the contact in their reports, none mention the result of the conversations. Do we have a he said/she said conflict here?
In those same minutes, Commissioner Martin notes his contacts and then explains the results of those contacts. This is good public service with no possible conflicting info.
Why aren't all the commissioners doing that? What did Walters say to Ashley Walker? What did Briggs say? What was Slater's explanation about that purchase?
In the future, I'd like to see results of contacts posted. What was said? What was explained? Just noting a contact means nothing. I guess I'll have to go to a meeting to suggest this change.
Here, see for yourself:

logical, I can't find those city commission minutes from Feb 3. Can you post a link? Thanks.
I wonder why they chose to go with the higher bid if that is indeed true?

Could it be that the local businesses have had a " Monopoly " for so long, they don' t realize that its a whole different business world today and being competitive in pricing is the name of todays business environment or that the lack of being competitive can be and sometimes is a " Killer " ?
Even Some of Walmarts merchandise is not competitively or lower priced, even with businesses in the same area that offer the same or similar products.
The internet has opened a whole world of competition .

create- Sometimes they don't post the minutes for quite a while.I remember a couple years ago,I asked the county why there were no recent records of the County meetings posted online. They said"We didn't know anyone was interested". But they did get them updated pretty quick.I think they ought to be required by law to be posted online by the end of the following business day.

I agree, blulitespecial. Isn't it unfortunate that we might have to pass a law to make them post their minutes in a timely manner? After all, in view of the technology most of us have at our fingertips these days, there's no reason why they should not get those minutes posted right away. They only think no one is interested.

Don't minutes need to be approved at a future board meeting before that can be official and correct?
