Enforce the Law

Wednesday, February 3, 2010

With all the fuss about cell phone use and texting while driving, I keep having the same thought — doesn’t “inattentive driving” cover these offences?

I’ve driven over the road for years and have seen people putting on make-up, reading a book or newspaper, eating and in general (not paying attention).

The law of “inattentive driving” is already “on the books.” My question is, “why not enforce it?”

Well how in the world are you going to get the police to pull another officer? I see them on phones constantly while they are driving. I haven't noticed any of them texting but I do see them talking on them quite often. And yes its while they are in there police car.

Law needs to cover both texting and talking on the cell phone. Include any unattented driving

You bet, Barbara! They need to enforce that law with the same energy and tenacity they use to enforce the law forbidding foreign nationals from illegally entering our country without proper permission or documentation. No, wait. If that were the case, we would soon have twenty million citizens texting while driving with no one seeming to care!

Not that I disagree, but how exactly were your eyes on the road if you have the time to notice what everyone else is doing??

Bjnemp, why do you feel the need to open the floodgates on a totally unrelated issue?

We see it daily, more laws that will not or cannot be enforced…a while back someone had quite a list either in the Gazette or on the paper’s opinion blog, skateboarding on downtown sidewalks, drinking in public, proper restraints for children in cars and trucks, smoking at a business entrance, excessive noise (car stereos blasting so loud that shop owners can hear them inside their stores in the wintertime with the windows and door closed, coming from a car with the windows rolled up!), driving in pouring rain without headlamps, littering, yadda-yadda…it gives the commissioners and other lawmakers something to do to make them feel important and an “achievement” to brag about when it is time for reelection.. They will pass the law then simply forget it, business as usual. Meanwhile people will continue to get hurt or even killed because of inattentive driving.

Yea...And what about not shoveling snow off your sidewalk.....there is another unenforced law.....throw in dogs running around unrestrained.....failure to signal a turn....cars parked in yards....stuffed furniture on porches.....attaching fliers to utility poles...spitting on the sidewalk. When would the police have time then write speeding tickets and arrest people for urinating in public. Give em a break!
