Police identify suspects in Burger King robbery

Monday, December 27, 2010

Police have released the names of the two Emporia men and one teenager who allegedly robbed Burger King early Sunday morning at gunpoint.

Agustin G. Armeta, 18, and Francisco Javier Bustos, 21, are in the Lyon County Jail and Rolando Coria, 17, is in juvenile detention after being suspected of robbing the restaurant at about 4 a.m. Sunday.

An undisclosed amount of money was taken from Burger King, 2725 W. 18th Avenue in Emporia, and later recovered by law enforcement Sunday. A handgun and other related evidence was also recovered.

According to an Emporia Police Department press release, a Burger King employee was outside performing a work-related task when he was approached by two men wearing masks.

The employee was ordered inside the restaurant at gunpoint. The night manager was confronted in the office by the armed suspects. The suspects demanded and received money from the employees.

Police said the two suspects locked the employees in the cooler and fled the scene. The employees were able to get out of the cooler and call 911 about 15 minutes later.

That is why it happened is because they knew when the door came open that is why BK employes are not suppost to go outside during the nite till a certain time in the morning. Hopefully that will teach everyone a lesson and they will learn to obey the BK rules. I am glad no one is hurt and I hope it wasn't the manager I think it was.

them folk should have learned from the donut shop robbery. If you have connection with the place of business, that is not a good thing.

Every robbery in Lawrence that looks like this involves the employee that opened the door. Just saying.

BK was the only place open on Christmas day...so they must have figured it would be loaded with cash. I drove by and the place was packed. People just didn't know what to do since walmart wasn't open.

i'm pretty sure that even if the worker hadn't of gone outside the back the guys who have found some way to enter. they wanted that cash and the gun made them all the more serious. doesn't matter what way the employee went out, they would've gotten in anyhow.

As a past employee, I know that the closing manager usually takes the deposit to the bank, so there was not as much cash as you think. When I worked with 2 of them, they were good kids, but life got the best of them and they made bad choices. As far as being outside in the morning, the employee might have been cleaning the lot since there is no business at 4am and the opening manager would be there soon. I wonder if the night manager knew it was them by their voice, Agustin and Fransico has distinct voices. I hope they find the right path and start making better choices and their family supports them through this ordeal, there familes are good people.

empciz-If you worked there then you know they cannot go to the bank on a Holiday. They were flipping the sign from lunch sign to breakfast so that is why they were outside.

And if you were a manager at all, you would know that on holidays certain banks have a drop box so stores do not have to carry a large amount of cash in their safes.

I suppose BK could not have such a bank, but it would seem rather unlikely for a big chain.

I deposited cash all the time on Sundays when the bank we used at the time (Bank of America) was not open so we didn't have a lot in the safe. Then we would pick up and sign off on the deposit on Monday.

And yes, we also did this on "bank holidays" where fast food places and the like would be open but banks would not be.

Back in the 80's I made very large cash bank deposits as an armed guard for two of the largest retailers in Emporia in the middle of night, on weekends etc. During the holiday season, we made several drops a day if necessary.

^Another reason it was easy to suspect a current or past employee, they knew the money was there and when and how to get in to get it. Surprised they wore a mask though, most of the time they forget those kinds of details :)

There's a reason for this. The prisons are overcrowded and legislators refuse to build on or build new. No money for prisons means a slap on the wrist. Lots of criminals running the streets. If you don't want to spend the money, then put up with the problems running the streets.
