Cycling becomes new theme for CVB

Kansas’ wide open spaces have been a hot spot for cyclists through the years. So much so that the Emporia Convention and Visitors Bureau has decided to use it as a theme for its 2011 marketing campaign.
The CVB is putting its money into the cycling theme and movie advertising and steering away from popular women’s magazines for now.
Betty Senn, CVB director, said the reason for choosing cycling for the theme was because it has become a great family sport and it seems to be growing across the United States. She also said there always seems to be a commercial for cycling apparel, gear and energy drinks on television. Since the success of the Dirty Kanza 200 and the Flint Hills Death Ride, the Emporia area has gotten a reputation for a great place for cycling.
“It has been discovered within the last five years by the rest of America,” Senn said. “There’s a lot of people who want to drive through the Flint Hills because they haven’t seen such wide open space. We’re kind of capitalizing on that.”

A man from Wisconsin stopped in Emporia last week. He got a room at the Candlewood Suites and asked the receptionist at the front desk where he could find a good bar in town. The receptionist suggested the Noose or the Town Royal downtown on Commercial Street. He followed the directions given to him by the receptionist and found himself on the turnpike headed for Wichita and was unable to turn around until the service area at Mattfield Green. By the time he made it back to Emporia it was late so he went to bed with a wallet full of cash. That is a crying shame.
Providing a shuttle service may not be cost effective but if the CVB could provide an easy to read map to assist travelers to find there way from the hotels by Wal-Mart to Emporia's nightlife, maybe overnight guests would spend more of their money in Emporia.

What happened to the rest of the story? When I first read it, they were talking about not purchasing ads in O magazine anymore but were going to pay movie theaters to play a tourist video about the big "E" Not knowing what it would cost because they don't know how many times it would be shown but they didn't seem to care because the hotel tax is paid by other people so it is alright to waste it on the front porch...or words to that effect.
I believe that the CVB should quit giving hotel tax to businesses in other towns. Those funds would be better served caring for the guests we already get. Our best advertisers are our current customers. People who stay here because they have too will return with friends because they want to.
Extreme cycling is just one of the great things Emporia has to offer. We also have a couple world class disk golf courses that attract disk golfers from all corners of the globe. Peter Pan Park is pretty awesome too. We can't forget the worlds best hamburger at J's carryout either. Now, if we could just get one of the local bars to come up with a signature drink like the one Long Island has this town might get a spot on the world map.

Can you imagine being in a theater in Eldorado and seeing an add to come to Emporia---I don't think so and the folks in the big city will think were a bunch of hicks. We deserve to have more public input into this!!!
