Annie Sommer, a resident at Flint Hills Care Center, passed a few tables of wooden decorations, puzzles, books and ceramics to look for Christmas gifts.
She settled on a doll that she will give her roommate, who isn’t doing well, she said.
Flint Hills Care Center this year organized a country store, where residents can shop for items for their family and friends for Christmas. When they attend activities at the retirement home, they receive tickets, which they use to purchase items from the country store.
“This is something,” Sommer said. “This is beautiful.”
Earlier this month items filled six tables. Lisa Elliott, who works in activities at Flint Hills Care Center, said she’s hoping to give residents more choice. Elliott said she is seeking donations of gently used items, including toiletries, perfumes, colognes, knick-nacks, puzzles, movies or clothes.
Two weeks ago each resident had the chance to buy three items. Sommer bought two dolls, and said she was also considering buying a purse.
Elliott said with Christmas around the corner the retirement home realized it wasn’t possible for every resident to get out and shop for Christmas.
“We came up with the idea to bring shopping to them,” Elliott said.
The residents will also get help wrapping their gifts before Christmas.
“We are about tradition and family here at Flint Hills Care Center and we hope to be able to continue this country store tradition throughout the year,” Elliott said.
If anyone in the community is interested in donating gently used or new items for the store, contact Elliott at 342-3280.

I believe the newspaper needs to be covering all the nursing homes activities during the holiday season. The nursing home that Elliott was formerly employed at has been having a country store for over a decade the exact way she is running hers...so no she just didnt come up with this GREAT idea....but it is an amazing way to bring holiday shopping to the residents and it would be wonderful if more businesses contributed every year to bring happiness to the residents, and I am happy that Flinthills Care can share in this tradition to make their residents happy also..... But please "Elliot" dont sit there and take credit for something you didn't come up with.

Please know that Lisa did not say that she came up with this idea! I work at Flint Hills Care Center, and have for many years, and Lisa, specifically gave credit to Holiday for the idea and stated that the residents at Holiday enjoyed it and thought that it would be a great addition to our facility, also. In the past years, the residents gained "dollars" during activities that could be used at end of the year auctions. We are happy to have Lisa as an addition to our facility and look forward to the knowledge that she has brought with her whether they are from a previous facility or her work with the girl scouts or things she learned in high school. Lisa, you are doing a great job and the residents are enjoying all the energy you have brought with you!

Lisa would not and did not take full credit for that country store. A lot of nursing homes have country stores it's nothing new and obviously some people can't read because it says "we " came up with the shopping idea so way to go Lisa keep up the great job you are doing!

A former employee makes some news and you have to blog negatively about it.?Let it go sotelo. Do you treat everyone in your life so crappily? Or do you save your venom for people who get more attention than you at any given moment? Either way eat a Snickers- you're being a diva- and leave her alone.

I must of failed to see where in the article it mentioned that she got the idea from her former employee..my mistake...i also failed to see where it mentioned that alot of nursing homes have a country store...i did see where it said "We came up with the idea to bring shopping to them"....my mistake for misunderstanding the article I'm not the only one who misunderstood it. I'm pretty sure I mentioned that "I am happy that Flinthills Care can share in this tradition to make their residents happy also" but I guess I could be mistaken...If that is being venomous towards someone, then I wonder what ur comment towards me is being "truth Police" U wouldnt know the truth about me if it came up and slapped you in the face. And as for treating people crappy in my life...no I sure dont, you would know that if you really knew me. And I'm not the type of person to seek attention, I really dont like attention or I'd be on the gazette making coments all day everyday. Thank though for your comment truth police I really would enjoy a snickers right now
