Tuesday Oddity: From the Sheriff Log

Tuesday, December 14, 2010

On today's sheriff log: Theft of a walnut tree in the 2000 block of North Highway 99.

Editor's Note: If you stole the walnut tree why not return it to the owner - after all it is the Christmas season.

Humor, eh? I guess stealing is funny... I'm sure the owner doesn't think so, though.

Also:
..why NOT return it...

Shame on you Chris Walker, Editor of The Gazette and descendant of William Allen White, for making humor out of theft. The Gazette has now sunk to a new low.

tzkmom (anonymous) says...

Truthfully, that would be like making humor out of someone stealing several hundred dollars from you. I don't think that you would find that funny, Mr. Walker. Especially at Christmas time.

Chevy_Guy (anonymous) says...

royt,

I wish I would have known that. I let a guy cut down my walnut tree last year and all he wanted was the wood. They are a pain to pick up after, they stink, and they stain everything.

By the way does anyone know how to get walnut stains out of rubber mats and fiberglass? I've tried everything including muratic acid and my poor boat is still stained from that stupid walnut tree.

The act of stealing isn't funny. But how do you steal a walnut tree? Do you just dig it up and cart it off? The humor is in the item that was stolen, not the act itself.

tzkmom (anonymous) says...

Yes, Chevy_Guy, you can sometimes get good money out of a walnut. The lumber industry only wants them tall enough and straight enough. Those are usually by creeks and water access. But if it is native walnut, wood workers like to buy that wood. I have a gun cabinet out of native walnut, it has a beautiful purple hue in the wood. Unsure how to help you with the stains, usually need to wear off of things.

It wouldn't be the item stolen to be funny. Would it be funny to have your trees cut down, dug up or carted off? Besides these we probably prepped to be picked up to be sold.

Really? Ever heard of a chainsaw and pickup? I don't take long to chunk up a tree and toss it in the bed, especially if there are 2-3 people. City folk.......

Where does this city reporter live? I may know someone that wants some landscape trees, shrubs, gravel or ornaments and I'll send them over since it is funny to take some else's items.
The stupidity abounds and lives strong in Lyon County Kansas!

tzkmom,

The common walnut and the black walnut and its allies, are important for their attractive timber, which is hard, dense, tight-grained and polishes to a very smooth finish. The color ranges from creamy white in the sapwood to a dark chocolate color in the heartwood. When kiln-dried, walnut wood tends toward a dull brown color, but when air-dried can become a rich purplish-brown. Because of its color, hardness and grain it is a prized furniture and carving wood.

I agree Steve....HO HO HO

So she saw more humor than deserved in a police blotter entry. She has now been properly put in her place.....

HUMOR would be more like this :

A blond guy asked his wife what she wanted for Christmas.

She said, : " a little more "hard wood" around here would be nice."

So the blond guy went out and stole a walnut tree.

Random firewood cutters are becoming very common anymore. When caught trespassing and confronted, they use the excuse that they thought landowners would appreciate the help cleaning up the place. People are getting real nervy.

Oh Chris and Brandy--you have upset the Puritans of our little community!

I recall H.L. Mencken's definition of Puritanism, which is an apt definition of being an Emporian: "The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy."

Now keep an eye on the want ads for walnut wood sales.

Sorry, Brandy, gotta chime in here with the rest of 'em. I sold a walnut tree about ten years ago. It had become a problem so I sold it. The straight ones are worth a LOT of money. They came, paid me, cut it down, and carted it off in a horse trailer in very long lengths. After curing, the guy told me he was going to sell it and that even the small pieces are valuable. Lotsa money in walnut.

You know them pesky " Wild Walnut Trees " are really hard to sneak up on or " Call " into " Chainsaw " range ! Besides when they hear that blamed chainsaw or hear a Walnut Tree hunter yell " Timber " the rest of em get realy spooked and can run really fast !

The best way to lure the "Walnut Tree " into range is spread some " Female Walnut Tree " scent around and them ambush the " Buck Walnut Tree " when he comes " A Courtin ", they can' t run very fast with " Wood " ???

Brandy I saw the humor in this. Not the act itself. I was wondering how one steals a walnut tree especially if no one heard anything. Chainsaws are noisy beasts.

December 14, 2010 at 7:20 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

biscuitboy (anonymous) says...

I think some of the disconnect here is a city/country thing. To someone like myself that has always lived in a town.....the idea of someone stealing a tree out of my yard without my realizing it seem almost ludicrous. Then you come up with these mental images of some masked miscreant running down the street somehow carrying a tree....root system still attached.....to the waiting open trunk of a Chevrolet.....and that image can be amusing.

Of course us city folks don.t appreciate that in the country a tree might be located some distance from the residence of the property owner, But that doesn't make it less his property nor less important/valuable to him.

While I can understand that.....the article was headlined initially as Tuesdays Humor and was intended as such. We have all at times made a joke that didn't quite fly. My problem was not so much with pointing out that trees do have value and stealing them is serious.....but with the superior nature of some of the criticism.

Country folk in the city are also prone at times to gaffes and social errors. It's just part of living in different worlds.

jafo, ah yes, taking a tree down, there's the rub. The last time I had a tree taken down it cost me nearly $500! So if you sell your pesky walnut tree for $300 and they take it down for you, look at the savings!

I once had a tree "stolen". I had recently planted a nice little maple tree in my yard. It was staked out and tied. Then one day I look out and my little tree was gone! I looked further out into my yard and there was my big brute of a lab. He was carrying my tree in his mouth! He was wanting to play fetch. To this day I have no idea how he managed to pull that tree up!! True story.

And I agree, there are a lot of folks on this blog that needs to "chill". It was meant to bring a little humor to a bad situation. Remember the 'possums?? LOL

TexasGirl (anonymous) says...

Sheesh, some people really need to lighten up and get a sense of humor. I'm quite sure the humor was in the thought of how the act was accomplished, not just the theft itself. I got quite a chuckle out of it myself.

I have a walnut tree in my yard which is very tall and fairly straight, but it's a big pain walking in the yard with all the walnuts strewn around. The only way to avoid that is to pick them up, which is a lot of work. Plus, it's location does not help with shade. If someone decided to steal it, I might get a little miffed at first but I'd also be somewhat relieved.
