Support the arts

Wednesday, December 1, 2010

I see the people of Emporia and Lyon County have lost another opportunity to attract tourists (money) and new business (money)! The huts that are to be torn down could be one of the greatest assets we have.

Properly used, these huts could become a major attraction for attracting tourists.

It has been known for at least 60 years that the communities that support the arts, grow.

Emporia could have a community theatre located in one of the huts. We have many people with theatre experience here who would love to act, work with sets, direct and design productions. People with a performance background will seek an outlet for something that has brought them satisfaction in the past. This could even be a dinner theatre.

The same thing is true for musicians. We have many jazz and western musicians here. One hut could be used for musicians to play what they want to play with out of town musicians welcome to join in the fun. Have one night for jazz players and another night for the western players. I have lived where this is done, with jazz players, and the number of people coming to listen was large. Musicians will usually play for free in this type of setting. (Have free popcorn and sell soft drinks and candy and you have a wonderful family outing for tourists, as well as for the local fans).

Emporia could also have a big band, as Topeka has. The Topeka Jazz Workshop big band and concert series. The band plays concerts in Gage Park, which are free to the public. For the record, the band is paid. Concerts held in the concert hall at Washburn University are not free. The concert is not free because major name jazz musicians are hired for these concerts.

One of the huts could house a community chorus. We have many talented singers who would welcome an outlet of this type.

One of the huts to house antique cars and farm machinery would draw people.

There should be not be an admission charge for any of the above with the exception of the theatre. It costs money to put on plays and everyone knows it. Donations should be accepted for the other events. Musicians are not likely to donate their talents if there is an admission charge. This becomes insulting.

I have no doubt that the new building will be attractive and functional. I have seen many new buildings in my 74 years. One thing that I have found is that the old buildings are usually more interesting. They represent something out of the past. To destroy the old simply so that we may have a better view of what will soon be “just another building” seems to this old man stupid at best. It also explains why Emporia has not grown! With what we can have (tourists, outlets for the arts, new businesses just so that we can have a better look at a new building is proof positive of why Emporia has not grown).

Consider this. A business man is considering relocating his business. He happens to be a jazz musician. So is another family member. He has a choice of Lawrence where he and this family member can participate in a weekly jam session, or Emporia where soon he can look at a new building? Which town will get his business? What is his business is in manufacturing? This means a lot of money for the winning town! As a jazz musician, I can tell you that it will not be Emporia. Nothing our people can say will bring this business here.

The huts will need the paint that has been offered, also insulation, heat and air conditioning and in some cases, stages and dressing rooms for the theatre. A small investment for something that Emporia has been wanting for years.

Consider the cost of a new building or buildings to house what we can have for a bargain price!

Are we finally going to get it right, or are we going to continue doing all of the wrong things and cry about how we need the money making things listed above.

By the way, when I come out to look at the new building, should (I) be bringing a prayer rug?

First off... No business could thrive in those metal sheds. Second- the new building has a theatre outside so there is your plays, music, and for the JAZZ (which this city a small following in). Third- they aren't really buildings, more like a metal shed that if painted would look more cheap than already do. To grow we need more jobs and newer buildings. No one would want to move to a town with a rundown look. This town needs to stop holding on to the old. We are finally moving foward and all people do is complain. The city just got a beautiful Arts Center which is located right next the the newly restored Granada Theatre. I do not agree with the Bowyer Building either and I think it should be thought out more, however the huts do need to go.

Good Lord, Larry Alderson.

Where do you live?

Emporia has about 6 million dollars worth of new and old, but beautifully remodeled, buildings in the 800 block of Commercial street dedicated to the arts.

The Granada Theater
Emporia Arts Council

Emporia also has a university with more than 1 theater or hall suitable for most any preformance.

And you want to put people in a barn?

Sorry, but JEESH !

The last time I looked Topeka had over 5 times the population of Emporia.

Larry also compared Lawrence to Emporia and talked about Jazz performances. Once again Emporia is smaller than Lawrence and there is not a huge market for jazz performances in our town. It has been tried and didn't work.

Is some body paying people to keep stirring this pot. I mean, even if Mr Alderson's plan had merit (which it doesn't), where has he been with all these ideas for all the months that this has been a hot button topic. It seems like every since the decision was made final, we have had a steady string of people coming out of the wood work with all these "great" ideas about how we could (and should) still keep those old relics.

It is enough to make you wonder why!

Yes, Larry Alderson, give it a rest. Are you part of some huge family scheme to keep this issue on the front burner? Turn it off already! The pot boiled over, the stuff inside is all burned up.

And by the way, Larry, what the hell is that comment about a prayer rug all about? What kind of trouble are you trying to make here?

I liked Mr. Alderson's article and agree with his idea's. Do you really think the new building will improve the chance of some big act coming to Emporia? We can't afford them now how will we be able to afford it after the new building is here. I really don't think paying someone close to $20,000. to tear the Quonsets down & putting money into a new building or lean-to for equipment storage is helping Emporia out. Oh wait I guess the paper said they will be doing Fundraisers to help support this project. Just what we all want another fundraiser, I will stick to supporting the school fundraisers. Thank You Mr. Alderson for speaking you mind, I am right behind you & waiting on my bashing.

They sure have been useful cans & there are alot of them around being used. Must be some darn good cans there. I certainly hope that if we are tearing them down that we are NOT putting a lean-to on the Anderson building to store equipment. Just how nice will that look? I am not saying I will not attend an activity at the new building I am just saying we should leave alone what we have. They are part of Emporia history, just like some of the other buildings that have been restored. I think we should respect the family that give them to us and leave them alone. They are still standing after a couple tornado's were close to them and I will say the same thing for the Boyer Building, if it is built as good as the Quonsets and still standing after a tornado nears I would hope it would not be touched out of respect for the family. I hope the new building gets taken care of a little better so we won't be going down this road again. I still stand by what I say I think an arena would have been nice and useful for all different things. There could have been a big billboard with a picture of Clint on it and naming it the Clint Boyer Arena/Building or whatever you'd want to name it.

But the one I just emptied had served it's intended and practical function. I couldn't see any sense in repainting it and keeping it around just for old times sake.

So I recycled that can. Just as I am sure will happen to the steel in the huts. It will be melted down and reformed into something with a brand new life and new role to play. Don't think of it as a death....think of it as a reincarnation.

Does anyone have any idea what it takes to attract any of the current " Big Acts " to make an appearance anywhere, let alone try and convince them to make an appearance in a small country town, with a population of around 20, 000 ?

Does anyone have any idea exactly how much monetary incentive it would take to get a " Big Act " like " Lady Ga Ga, Christina Aguilara, Beyonce, Lady Antibellum, Taylor Swift or any of the " Big Acts " to come to Emporia . You would have to be able to guarantee a certain number of advanced ticket sales to just get the " Big Acts " to even consider coming to Emporia, Ks.

Please, people, cut the umbilical cords to the " Cans " and let them go, they have graciously served there purpose for many years and are now old, worn out and can no longer serve a useful purpose, except to cause arguement and divislion !

Getting back to Mr. Alderson's letter.

The main point I gleaned from Mr. Alderson's letter was that supporting the arts helps with tourism, growth and quality of life. In that point there is No argument.

His idea of venues was what I took objection with.

I hope he will tour the new Arts Council building when they have their grand opening.

Actually, they will be open tomorrow , the arts gift shop) from noon till 5. I think there is space in the new building for smaller performances.

And if he has not already been in the beautiful Granada Theater , I urge him to check it out. FANTASTIC !

We have the Emporia City Band. We now have a city orchestra, along with the community chorus that is giving a concert soon.

And if the original plans on the new Bowyer building hold fast, there will be an amphitheater on one side of the building that opens up for performances.

Emporia can be proud of the way we support the arts.

Tired of the same old song and dance surrounding the Quonset demo, REWBA wasn't going to comment on Larry Alderson's opinion but just passively read the comments of others and smile. Then the comment that chase posted sparked inspiration and so here goes...

Drive by the Lyon County Fairgrounds and take a good look at those WWI Army Surplus buildings. They are disgusting! If there was a demand for any of the uses that Larry mentioned, then there would already be lines of artist waiting their turn to use those structures. We have yet to see any lines at the Quonset Huts. In fact, anyone seeking the use of a structure at the Fair will get angry if they are offered a Quonset oven to display their project in. People prefer to set up a hot army tent on the dirt than to be placed inside the Quonset chamber of horror.

It wasn't until the board decided to tear down the eyesores that Mr Anderson offered to put lipstick on those pigs.

Thank you chase for stirring the pot and yanking my chain.

First off Mr. Anderson offered to take care of the Quonsets long before the decission was made. The buildings could look nice after repair no matter what they look now. I guess to some of us they are not an eyesore they are just part of what helped get the fair started. Going to a few fairboard meetings without being on the board is how we learned a little about what they have on the long term plan. RESPECT is not worth anything, as long as there is a family still in this area and willing to fix what his family started they should let him do it. I will say the same with the Boyer building as long as they want to keep it and willing to fix it let them. Glad I don't have enough to donate to have my wished destroyed later.

December 3, 2010 at 8:58 a.m. ( | suggest removal )

create (anonymous) says...

If I remember correctly, once Mr. Anderson found out how much it was going to cost to improve these buildings, he withdrew his offer. Here is an excerpt from a recent Gazette story.

To paint the huts, it would be $8,559 per building. Glass would be another $100 per pane. Add to that cost additional repairs and patching of buildings, it would take between $8,000 and $12,000 per hut to get one building up and going, Phillips said.

“Take a look at the foundations,” Phillips said. “The foundations are splitting apart and breaking down. At some point you are going to have to fix the foundation or they are going to fall over.”

E.T. Anderson, grandson of the E.T. Anderson who donated land for the fairgrounds and erected the Quonset huts, was among the speakers during the meeting. In previous meetings, Anderson had said he would pay to paint the Quonsets and replace the glass.

“I think that can be reasonably be taken out of the equation,” Anderson told the fair board.

I rest my case.

December 3, 2010 at 9:38 a.m. ( | suggest removal )

svincent (anonymous) says...

I too was at that meeting..Mr. Anderson told them the cost to them to fix the Quonsets could be taken out of the equation as he has offered to fix them and he will stand by that, it was not going to cost anybody but him to fix the Qounsets. He was not backing out of fixing them just merely telling them take out of their equation of cost to them. You must have missed the part where he said he still stands by what he said, he will fix them given the chance.

If your interpretation of the meaning of Mr Anderson's statement is essentially correct then the account in the Emporia Gazette was very misleading. That account also led to frequent mention of his having taken the offer off the table.

If that account, and the interpretation of that account, was an inaccurate as you suggest, why is this the first time the paper's account has been publicly challenged? Why has Mr Anderson himself not come forward and clarified this error?

But which ever version is accurate is irrelevant now. The decision has been made and appealed through the highest applicable level of government. Unless you folks are planning on filing a lawsuit to halt the demolition, I suggest you accept the decision and shut up about it. If you are going to sue then put your money where your mouth is and do it already. But I don't really expect to see that because that again would require somebody to actually come up with some money.

Painting and window replacement may not be a large problem or taxk or tremendous cost, as far as the " Huts " are concerned, however depending on the deterioration of the concrete floors and foundations and bringing the foundations and concrete floor back up to building code standards may just bring the repair costs and the saving of the " Huts " into the real realm of cost prohibitave !!!!

FYI todays price for ready mix concrete is around $90.00 per cubic yard for a 4000 lb. psi mix. I don' t know how many cubic yards of concrete would be needed to repair the floors and foundations but it could turn out to be quite a substantial sum . The cost of paint and window panes may pale in comparison to the cost of concrete and concrete finishing labor.

The decision has been made, get over it and move on. There are much more important things to worry about in the world and Emporia, than 4 run down tin cans.

If you don' t think there are more worrisom things going on in the world, I could give you some recent breaking news on the national front, but they do not have anything to do with the " Tin Can " discussion/fiasco !

The Arts Council has made excellent use of their funds. Floors are hardwood in the showrooms, but are painted concrete everywhere else. They should last a long time. It is an impressive place and the contractors should be congratulated for the beautiful work.

Clint has certainly done more for this town than your precious Jesus has. I can name (and prove) at least 3 things Clint has done to enrich the lives of Emporians. What has your god done, Larry? Can you prove it? Clint deserves our praise. Can the same be said for your imaginary deity?

Henry. Its a little messed up to be saying something about religion in that kind of tone. He may of meant something completely different. Keep those stupid as* thoughts to yourself. We dont need any red necks who worship only nascar to get excited when his name is mentioned. There is more to life then wishing you were famous.

emporiahelper,
Why is it "messed up" to question religion? Oh, let me guess. Is it because some dudes who wrote a book thousands of years ago said their imaginary friend didn't want you to question it? Give me a break.
If your god didn't like me posting things like this, wouldn't he stop me? Let's let god speak for himself for a change. I'm listening... (crickets) Yeah, that's what I though.
My point is that Larry thinks worshiping Clint in the new Bowyer Shrine would be silly, but I don't understand why that is sillier than worshiping a god you've never seen or heard. Give credit where credit is due. Before you devote yourself to someone/something, think logically about what that person/thing has done for you.

emporiahelper,
You missed my point. You see, god has never done anything for me. (that I have any evidence of, anyway) Why does he deserve my devotion and praise?
My friends and family, on the other hand, do things for me all the time! They deserve my devotion and praise because they have actually enriched my life. For that reason, I invest my time, energy, and money in building relationships with living, breathing humans; not an imaginary man in the sky. I get a good return on my investment because most people will return the favor and do something for me. Devoting yourself to god is a one-way street. You can give your whole paycheck to the church and god won't even send you a thank you card let alone drive you to work when your car doesn't start.

Getting back on subject, Clint Bowyer has giving directly to our community and, as far as I can tell, god hasn't. Why isn't Clint more deserving of your devotion and praise? Why is praying to him so absurd when you think praying to the equivalent of the tooth fairy is normal?
My dinner prayer:
Thank you, Clint Bowyer, for the gifts you have bestowed upon us. Please help our community thrive and watch over Grandma. She is a big fan, so please grace her with a win your next race. Amen.

I'm not worried about my blasphemy because if there is a god, he's gotta be really old. If there's one thing I know about old people, it's that they don't know how to use computers. Therefore, he'll never see this and I'm safe!
