Pats on the back

Friday, August 20, 2010

EDITOR’S NOTE: Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. The following folks deserve a pat on the back ...

ESU’s School of Business, which added a new master’s degree program. The new degree is the Enterprise Resource Planning concentration, and it is the first program in the state to combine business accounting, manufacturing data and customer relations data using the Enterprise system software.

• The City of Emporia and Emporia Police Department for sponsoring National Night Out. The event brought neighbors together for cookouts.

• William Allen White Community Partnership, which held a children’s carnival at the William Allen White House State Historic Site. Hundreds of children enjoyed games and free food.

• Rand Hopkins, who opened Complete Works engraving at 13 E. Sixth Ave. Hopkins started engraving as a hobby and now is doing it full-time.

• The 4,400 ESU students who moved back to campus for a new school year and Emporia Main Street for planning the block party to welcome them back.

• United Way of the Flint Hills, which kicked off its Pacesetter campaign.

• The Wolf Creek team in first place in the Corporate Challenge.

• Emporia State University, which is ranked among the nation’s top 100 regional universities by U.S. News and World Report. ESU was ranked 84th in the nation and 29th in the Midwest region.

What? Nothing mentioned about the folks up north in Americus that held all those fundraisers for their sick teacher? Sheesh. What's it take to get a little recognition?

I give a pat on the back to the neighboring school district that has employed Mr. Awesome. Their kids are very fortunate to have him as a teacher.

God bless you, Mr. Awesome. I hope that district is better to you than USD 253 (who apparently does not listen to the parents who care) was.
