Pats on the Back

Friday, August 6, 2010

EDITOR’S NOTE: Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. The following folks deserve a pat on the back ...

Former Emporian Eric McCabe, a professional disc golfer who won the men’s open division of the World Championship. Because of the win, a disc with his name on it will be produced and sold next year, earning him royalties to help with expenses on the tour.

• Emporia voters who agreed that the city needs to continue collecting sales tax monies dedicated to economic development and property-tax relief.

• Officials at Shiloh Home of Hope who decided to use a single-family home the organization owns for a shelter for homeless families.

• John Conklin, the new chef at the Emporia Country Club. Conklin has worked up a new menu that includes seasonal selections. He also wants to find local sources for the ingredients in his dishes.

• Organizers of a spaghetti dinner that raised more than $2,000 for Kristi Karr-Morgan’s unexpected medical expenses. Two other fundraisers are planned this next week on Wednesday and Aug. 14.

• All of the Lyon County 4-H’ers, their parents and other family members who work so hard to make the Lyon County Fair a success. The 4-H’ers — and fair board members — work to get the grounds ready for the fair. The competitors work hard on their entries, whether shown in the air-conditioned Anderson Building or the animals kept and shown outdoors.

I tip my hat to all the Emporians who want economy. If you study history, Americans will pay any price to get it. The beauty of not having enough money is that we won't get involved in things we don't need.

I tip my hat to the road workers on the Kansas Turnpike who alerted people to the traffic jam that killed a young man. There professionalism saved the lives of a lot of people.

I tip my hat to all the Emporia Gazette blogers who made some very good points. In a democracy your side might lose the election but, what you advocate might be adopted and that's what makes America a great place to live.

I tip my hat to all the college students that come to ESU. You add so much to our community. The students from nations all over the world are very special. We learn as much from you as you learn from us.

I tip my hat to the weather as there is nothing more democratic than a 112 heat index.
