With a special question on the ballot and a native son running for a national office, Emporia and Lyon County voters turned out Tuesday in higher numbers than the state average.
Before Tuesday’s primary, Secretary of State Chris Biggs predicted a 19-percent voter turnout.
In Lyon County, 26 percent of registered voters cast ballots. The tallies showed that 46 percent of registered Republicans voted in the primaries. On the other side, the number of ballots cast equaled 24 percent of registered Democrats in Lyon County. Because the Democratic party, however, opted for an open primary, some of those ballots could have been cast by unaffiliated voters.
Emporia’s special question — whether to extend the half-cent sales tax through 2024 — drew 25 percent of the 13,718 registered voters in the city.

This was a great turnout and now we need to come together as a community and work for the common good. Were just one good idea away from the best economic expnsion in the history of Emporia. No other town can say that they are within 100 miles of 85% of the population of Kansas.
