A New Leader — Collins named head coach

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

Jory Collins spent the last week campaigning for the Emporia State women’s basketball head coaching position.

Collins, who spent nine of the last 10 years as an assistant at ESU, believed he was the best choice to succeed his old boss Brandon Schneider, and he convinced president Michael Lane and athletic director Kent Weiser with his vision for the program. Collins was introduced as the new head coach at a 10:30 a.m. press conference today.

“I just talked to Kent about wanting to maintain and try to keep on improving what’s been built here,” Collins said. “What Cindy Stein and Brandon Schneider have accomplished the last 15 years has been terrific. I stressed to him that my experience here put me in a position to maintain that and be able to do that better than anybody else they were going to be able to bring in.”

Collins certainly has a lot to live up to. Schneider left last Tuesday for Stephen F. Austin after 12 years as the head coach at ESU. In that time, he won 306 games, six MIAA regular season titles, three MIAA tournaments, four Regional titles and finished with a National championship.

“I think it’s probably a double-edged sword in some ways,” Collins said. “The expectations are going to be off the charts, but as a competitor, you want to coach at a place where you’re expected to win, instead of a place that doesn’t have expectations.”
