An Americus native was chosen to be the model for a new statuette depicting a female U.S. Army Corps of Engineers park ranger to honor the women who have served at the Corps project sites nationwide.
Amanda Peters, the daughter of Alan and Peggy Peters of Americus, was chosen to be the model for the statuette by Tulsa District Corps of Engineers District Commander Col. Anthony C. Funkhouser. Peters is the natural resources specialist with the Tulsa District Corps of Engineers.
Peters was born in Emporia. She grew up in Americus and has one older sister, Ali Stufflebean who lives in Galva. Peters attended school through eighth grade in Americus and then went to Council Grove High School. She attended Hutchinson Community College on a track scholarship where she was All-American in javelin both years. She then attended Kansas State University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in park management and conservation.
