Dustin Andrews started the ESU Relays on Saturday with a win in the high jump for the second straight week, setting the tone for a great day by the ESU jumpers.
The Hornets had four of their 11 individual champions in the jumps. Jennifer Robinson won the high jump and long jump, and Josh Honeycutt won the triple jump and finished second in the long jump.
The distance runners had a strong showing as well, also winning four titles. Adam McGovern won the 800 meters, Will Hohmeier won the 1,500 meters, Skyler Delmott won the 5,000 meters and Andrew Wayman won the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The 4X800-meter relay team of Dillon Cowing, Hohmeier, McGovern and Craig Saalfield also won.
Other event winners were Jackie Jacobs in the 200 meters, Vincent Howze in the 400-meter hurdles and Kevin Rouhlac in the hammer throw.
No one was as impressive as Andrews, simply for the fact that he just started training three weeks ago. The three-sport athlete has had little rest this year, going from football straight into the basketball season and now track.
Since basketball ended, Andrews has lost 12 pounds and focused on increasing the strength in his legs. In two meets, he’s won two titles, and his best jump on Saturday of 6 feet, 11 inches was a provisional qualifier and .75 inch away from his personal best.
“I’m almost shocking myself right now,” Andrews said. “Because if these are just normal jumps with my legs as tired as they are, training as hard as I have been, then I’m looking forward to the end of the season when I back off the weights.”
Robinson, like Andrews, also said she feels her best jumps are ahead of her. After winning the long jump with a provisional mark of 18 feet, 9 1/4 inches, she ran straight over to compete in the high jump and did not have any time to warm up.
Robinson still won the high jump, clearing 5-5.75.
“I’m content with it, as long as that’s the lowest I get all year, then I’m content with that,” she said. “But I don’t want to jump any lower than that.”
Honeycutt had motivation on his side after finishing second in the high jump. Honeycutt dominated the triple jump, winning by almost two feet with his jump of 50 feet, 10 inches, which was an automatic qualifier.
Doug Marshall and Matt Koelling finished third and fourth, respectively, in the triple jump and both provisionally qualified.
Hohmeier was sort of the surprise winner for the ESU distance runners. Hohmeier ran behind Kansas State’s Danny Schneider for the first two laps. Schneider had the best time coming into the race, but in the third lap, Hohmeier passed him and took a commanding lead. His time of 3:58.78 was his personal best and nearly five seconds faster than second place.
“I was just thinking if I stayed with him and worked with him, he would pull me through and let me get a PR off of him. I felt like he wasn’t going as fast and I wanted to go a little faster, so I decided it was time to make a move,” Hohmeier said. “Coach was yelling at me to make a move, so I did.”
The ESU sprinters only won one title — Jacobs in the 200 meters — but they also had several strong performances.
The men’s 4x100-meter relay team of Derwin Hall, Josh Schuler, Shjaun Richardson and Howze was the closest to winning for the Hornets.
The Hornets led for most of the race, and Howze had the lead in the third leg when he went to hand off to Richardson. The two did not get off a clean handoff, and Allen County passed them during the exchange. The Hornets ended up finishing second with a provisional qualifying time of 41.21 seconds.
Schuler earned two other provisional qualifying marks. He finished third in the 200 meters and fourth in the 100 meters.
Brooke Kent had three top three finishes. She finished second to Robinson in the long jump, finished third in the triple jump and third in the 100 meters after running the best time in the prelims.
The Hornets are back at Welch Stadium this weekend for the D-II Challenge, which begins on Thursday with the multi-events.
