Last fall when Emporia State football coach Garin Higgins met with his quarterbacks, he had to find extra seating in his office.
This spring the quarterback situation is less complicated as Higgins has just two quarterbacks to work with, Tyler Eckenrode and Sheldon Smith, and the two were the center of attention in the first scrimmage of the spring on Thursday night at Welch Stadium.
“I love it,” Higgins said. “I know it’s a little scary because you only have two right now going through spring football, but I think it’s the most beneficial thing for both those young men because they’re getting as many reps as they can, more than they ever have.”
Both quarterbacks had their moments during the scrimmage. Eckenrode was accurate and led a couple long scoring drives.
