KDHE readies

flu-count system

Emporia school district officials expect to begin a new system for tallying causes of student and staff absences within the next few days. The system may arrive just in time to record an absentee increase that may have begun earlier this week.

M. Theresa Davidson, associate superintendent of personnel for the district, said that the new system should make it easier to collect information and to track absences caused by influenza-type symptoms. The system was created by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and will be implemented in cooperation with the Lyon County Health Department.

“Guidelines will come from KDHE and all of the community health centers will be reporting that information,” Davidson said. “It’s largely so they can monitor the movement of the flu across the state and make some good decisions about how we should be addressing it.”

I'm glad to see that the school district is being so proactive with tracking and with preventative measures. These measures may help stem the tide until kids can be vaccinated and develop immunity.

Good move. It should be interesting to see how H1N1 affects the little ones in school. Wash your hands, people!

Just one more way that the Emporia school district is accepting responsibility for the welfare of the children that attend our schools...what good babysitters they are.
