HAYS — Emporia State’s players dressed in silence on Saturday night after a 40-20 loss to Fort Hays State.

With four straight losses, four straight failed comebacks and four straight weeks of replaying the same mistakes, the Hornets struggled to find the words to explain what had happened to go from a promising start to where they are now.

“It sucks right now,” linebacker Katrel Larkins said. “We’re all hurting because we know we’re a step away from being 4-0 or 4-1.”

Instead, the Hornets are 1-4, 0-3 in the MIAA and searching for positives.

“I feel good about our football team and feel good about what we’re doing,” coach Garin Higgins said. “I don’t think we’re necessarily searching. We’re hurting. I’m hurting for those kids in that locker room because they prepared hard and prepared well.”
