The question when Emporia State faced Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday at White Auditorium was, how would the Hornets bounce back from their first loss of the season?
The third-ranked Hornets were tested, but they answered that question with a 3-2 victory over the 18th-ranked Mavericks to move to 14-1 on the season. Arica Shepard posted her eighth straight double-double, and Ting Liu also had double figures in two categories, including a career-high 18 digs.
“Teamwork and the environment were keys,” Emporia State coach Bing Xu said. “Our players brought the crowd into it, and it boosted our team spirit.”
The opening set started out close, with neither team able to pull too far ahead. The set was tied at 6-6, then again at 10-10. But that’s when the Hornets hit their stride, putting together a run that saw them go up 20-12 on their way to a 25-15 victory. The crowd roared, and the Hornets led one set to zero.
