The storms in the area didn’t provide the only fireworks Friday night, as Waverly and Hartford combined for 98 points and 697 yards of total offense in a 50-48 Waverly win.
The game also saw 90 yards in penalties and only four punts, two by each team.
Hartford jumped out to a 22-16 lead in the first quarter with Adam Ewy scoring twice.
The Bulldogs responded in the second quarter, outscoring the Jaguars 14-6 as they took a 30-28 lead into the break. Each team put up 14 points in the third quarter as the game headed for its climactic end with Waverly clinging to a two-point advantage. In the fourth quarter, Travis Sipe connected with Josh Teal for a 15-yard touchdown and gave WHS an eight-point lead. Ewy would respond for HHS with a five-yard run, but the Jaguars could not convert the point after.
The Jags had 219 rushing yards, led by Adam Ewy, who ran 27 times for 164 yards.
“Adam did a great job for us tonight,” Hartford coach Patrick Gardner said. “Adam made a lot of those plays, but the offensive line gave him the opportunities.”
The offensive line also gave quarterback Colten Barrett plenty of time to throw the ball, as he completed 11-of-19 passes for 133 yards.
“I thought the offensive line did everything we asked them to do tonight,” Gardner said. “They gave us time to throw the ball and run for 219 yards tonight. Offensively, everything was great. We only had to punt the ball twice.”
The real problems came on defense, as Waverly converted for touchdowns on seven of 10 possessions and carried the ball for 138 yards and passed for 207.
“I was really disappointed with the defense tonight. Every opportunity we gave them they took advantage of it,” Gardner said. “We didn’t step up to the challenge, and we just didn’t have it on defense tonight.”

Madison 50, Marais des Cygnes Valley 0
The rain did not get to Madison in time to see football on Friday night, and the Bulldog running backs took advantage of it.
Six running backs shared the load, as the Bulldogs rolled to a mercy-rule victory at halftime and accumulated 311 yards rushing on the night.
It wasn’t just the offense that got things done for the Bulldogs, they also did a great job of stopping the Trojan attack. They held MdCV to only 84 yards of total offense as they intercepted two Zach Engelken passes.
“I thought our defense really showed up tonight,” assistant coach Tracy Griffin. “They threw a couple of new formations at us and we did a really good job of adjusting to them.”
Even though he was battling illness all week, Zach Nowell may have had his best night of the season. He finished with five rushes for 107 yards and scored two touchdowns, including a 62-yard TD.
“Zach did a really great job of running the ball tonight. He really ran hard,” Griffin said. “He was battling illness all week and didn’t come back until Thursday, but he really did a great job tonight.”
The good rushing night didn’t stop with Nowell, as Kole Schankie carried the ball five times for 86 yards and two touchdowns. Reece Childers added 56 yards, while Zach Fox added 54 yards. Childers also finished with 45 yards receiving and a touchdown.
Collin Kile, again filling in for an injured Henry Ott, completed all six of his pass attempts for 61 yards and one touchdown.
“The offensive line did a great job. They threw a lot of blitzes at us, and we did a good job of picking up the blitzes. We did a good job of getting the ball to all of them,” Griffin said.
Madison remains undefeated and will go on the road to take on Southern Coffey County next Friday.

Lebo 38, Flinthills 6
Lebo remained undefeated by racking up 192 yards of total offense to roll to its fourth straight victory. Cole Brockelman continued his string of strong performances, as he carried the ball seven times for 75 yards and two touchdowns.
The Wolves scored all their points in three quarters, as the game was called due to inclement weather after a 30-minute delay.
Most of the Wolves’ scoring came in the first quarter, as they put up 30 points on touchdowns scored by four different players.
“We got off to a good start and we came out mentally prepared and caught Flinthills flat-footed,” coach Butch Jones said.
The real story of the night may have been the special teams, as they garnered two points off a safety on a blocked punt by Blake Davies, and Devon Johnston returned a punt 57 yards to score a touchdown.
“Blake Davies getting the safety really gave us early control,” Jones said. “The big punt returns really kept a short field ahead of us. And the touchdown helped keep us in command of the game.”
The defense also got the job done, holding Flinthills running back Garrett Breech to only 60 yards and forcing two fumbles, both of which they recovered. They also picked off a James Hinnen pass once in the game.
“I was really happy with how our defense played tonight,” Jones said. “Our linebacker Calvin Perry stepped up with eight tackles and Brent Gould added seven. We never really gave their running back a chance to get started.”
Lebo returns home to face Marmaton Valley next Friday.

Olpe 48, West Elk 6
Olpe’s defense came up big to help the Eagles keep another team in single digits and keep their record perfect at 4-0.
Junior Linden Stueve put up impressive numbers on the ground, running for 179 yards and three touchdowns on just 15 runs. Stueve had two long touchdown runs in the second period to help Olpe pull away early.
When asked about Stueve, coach Chris Schmidt seemed excited, bringing up the fact that Stueve has become a potent threat on both sides of the ball. Playing at strong safety/linebacker on defense, Stueve had six tackles.
“Linden is learning the game well, showing a strong attention to detail and remains very consistent,” Schmidt said. “... Our goal tonight was to hold West Elk to three first downs. We did better than that, as the only two first downs we allowed were penalties.”
Defensive tackle Jase Hubert played a big role in shutting West Elk down at the line of scrimmage.
“Hubert was a 270-pound force, making six tackles and more importantly closing holes all night to help shut down West Elk’s running game,” Schmidt said.
Olpe looked strong again this week, showing a strong defense and big plays on offense. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the defense allowed its first score in two games.
