Emporia High’s soccer team needed a win in the worst way. On Thursday, one goal was all the Spartans needed to get it.
Jesus Saldana’s goal off a pass from Luis Guzman at the 50:40 mark in the second half gave Emporia a 1-0 win over Topeka High at TRYSA, snapping the Spartans’ three-game losing streak.
“We needed some inspiration to keep us going,” Saldana said. “Because it’s been awhile since we’ve won something.”
An uninspired, scoreless first half on the part of both teams didn’t offer much in the way of promise for the Spartans. But at halftime, Emporia coach Angel Cornejo stressed to his team that it had the talent to overtake Topeka High, which fell to 1-7 with the loss. The Spartans just had to be patient.
