DONORS WHO GAVE money to the Emporia Arts Council for a new building on Commerical Street. The community raised $2.8 million. Construction will start within 30 days.

• Ken Tanner who opened a new carpet store at 1925 W. Sixth Ave. The store is called Tanner’s Carpet.

• Organizers and participants of the Beau Arndt Outdoor Appreciation Day. More than 70 children participated in the first-time event.

• Jeline Harclerode who was chosen as a Region 1 Teacher of the Year. She will compete for Kansas Teacher of the Year.

• Caesie Reynolds, Joslyn Barton, Lindy Arndt, Jenna Stanbrough, Hannah Watkins, Mark Kolmer, Bryce Childs, Greg Canales, Cory Obermeyer and Chris Reimer who were named 2009 Homecoming King and Queen candidates at Emporia High School.

• The City of Emporia, which received a $300,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce for street improvements.
