The Emporia State football coaches believe they’ve found a solution to their team’s kicking woes, and the solution comes from an unlikely source: the basketball team.
Senior guard Dustin Andrews, who also high-jumps on the track team, joined the football team this week as a place kicker, taking over for sophomore Will Maxwell.
Andrews has never played football before — his parents wouldn’t let him — but he played soccer in high school. ESU basketball coach David Moe suggested to Andrews last week that he give kicking a shot, and Andrews kicked Monday in front of the ESU coaches for the first time.
“After I hit a 50-yarder,” Andrews said, “the coach was like, ‘All right, I’ve seen enough. It’s time to get you some pads.’”
The kicking game has been a problem for the Hornets throughout the season, particularly in the Central Missouri game when Maxwell missed a 31-yard attempt with two seconds left that would have tied the game.
